Why CompoundWord Monsters Don't Bother Me

See, and I think that is where this sort of logic falls apart. Everyone will have a different threshold of what sounds reasonable, and whether compoundwords are relevant to it or not. Shadowfell sounds perfectly iconic and thematic to me. Shadowdark, on the other hand, sounds silly. Thing is...

Trying to work around a DM's restriction

The final version that actually went into the magazine fixed the major offense on behalf of the Coure attendant (and other similarly overpowered familiars in the same article). It wasn't really an issue of heroic vs epic familiars, it was an issue of... familiars that could have been better...

Unearthed Arcana: Strange Gods (Dragon #398)

The thing is, the vast majority of UA stuff simply doesn't fit in the builder. I'm relatively confident that this article wasn't UA because of the power options, but because of the rules for generating your own god. I think it would have been better to split it up into two articles - one for...

Unearthed Arcana: Strange Gods (Dragon #398)

Yeah, apparently the flub with Divine Identification was that it was the recipient of elements intended for Rune of Elemental Attunement, thus leaving them both messed up. Once fixed, it scales 5/tier, and can give a damage bonus if used as Rune of Destruction (or targets an extra person with...

    Monster Makeover: Shademaw

Interesting article, and the attention to epic tier is not undeserved. That said, I'd rather see updates for material prior to MM3/Monster Vault, since the monsters in those are already pretty well done. Earlier solos and other options are where work is really needed, and some iconic updates...

Would you have bought the Class Compendium?

I wasn't planning on buying it - but then, I wasn't really the market for it. I think it was aimed at two crowds - those who were clamoring for an updated PHB with errata included, plus players who joined with Essentials and wanted access to the older material. I think it would have sold, but...

    Walking Wounded

Daily powers often produce effects that last the entire encounter. Typically by buffing the PC, but in this case, by hindering the enemy. The effect is one that can be avoided and isn't too extreme anyway, so I don't see any real balance issues with it.

Unearthed Arcana: Strange Gods (Dragon #398)

Unfortunately, not that great a one. The power it gives isn't bad - effectively 5/tier levels of permanent resistance for 2-3 PCs... but requires giving up the Runepriest's core leader feature (Rune of Mending). In some campaigns, it may be worthwhile. In the vast majority, even if there are...

Unearthed Arcana: Strange Gods (Dragon #398)

So, I rolled up a deity via these charts, which was awesome. And, surprisingly, it all fit together reasonably well, for the most part: Alignment: 8 - Evil Origin: 8 - Mortal who has gained power Goals: 9 - Recognition by other gods of excellence, prowess or power Personality: 9 - Indifferent...

    Random Encounter Tables in 4th

The approach I used with my random encounter table was to have a very broad range of encounters... let me see if I can track down my notes... The encounters ranged from trivial to significant - and even the more dangerous ones, I tried to focus on simpler and easier fights, no more than 3...

    Random Encounter Tables in 4th

I've used them in some scenarios, but not quite in the classic fashion. I've typically tied them into an extended exploration skill challenge. For example: The PCs have discovered that a cult of Yuan-ti are tied to an epic plague sweeping the world. They have discovered the Yuan-ti temple in...

How is the Wizard vs Warrior Balance Problem Handled in Fantasy Literature?

Well, I'd think that "Trying to find ways to mitigate frustrating elements of a game I otherwise like" wouldn't fall under the tab of 'ridiculous', but it seems there is little I can say to convince you otherwise. For the first point, has anyone truly insisted that there aren't any folks who...

How is the Wizard vs Warrior Balance Problem Handled in Fantasy Literature?

Sure, it isn't a universal experience. But many players clearly do find this to be a potential issue with a game they otherwise enjoy. Here's the thing - I'm not saying that (c) is that you need to accept my problem with the game. I'm saying that (c) is that I would prefer to see the game change...

How is the Wizard vs Warrior Balance Problem Handled in Fantasy Literature?

Except that, in Basketball, playing the game is pretty thoroughly tied to the competitive element, as it is not in D&D. He wasn't bringing in winning because of its relevance to D&D, but because of its relevance to basketball. Well, I've certainly seen single instances ruin an entire session...

    Heroes of Shadow

Yeah, I can certainly see that - especially if it started out as something that could potentially provide near-constant invisibility, I can see them trying to make it functional without overpowered... and ending up with what they have now, which went too far in the other direction. Which one...

Why CompoundWord Monsters Don't Bother Me

This gets back to what I don't understand - equating all compound names as equally good/bad. Sure, Strongclaw Owlbear sounds silly to me. Feymire Crocodile sounds awesome. Just like everyone in my group loves saying Babau! but couldn't remember the names for Barbed Devils or Ice Devils if...

    Not available anymore?

I've run into this intermittently for months now. I'll check the page for old issues, and everything will be greyed out (even if I refresh). I go back 10 minutes later, and it is all available. No idea what causes it, but seems more like website programming failure on WotC's part rather than any...

How is the Wizard vs Warrior Balance Problem Handled in Fantasy Literature?

Oh, come on now. You pushed heavily forward with the basketball metaphor, basketball being a competition that involves trying to win the game. And when he gives in and tries to respond via that metaphor, you use that as an excuse to cast his argument about trying to "win" D&D? Seriously, poor...

    Heroes of Shadow

Generally not, since it comes as one of several benefits, along with potent racial feats and a strong racial ability, rather than one of only two benefits, accompanied by no racial feats, a very weak racial power, a significant racial downside... and the only actual racial benefit not actually...

    Feats & Fighters

Hmm, that does seem to be technically true. My group has always considered the free rituals part of the wizard's class feature, though, and I wouldn't be surprised if other groups run it the same way.
