Rant on Errata and what Wizards need to do to move forward.

They've fixed the major issues with the new CB. They haven't added extra functionality, but it is indeed an improvement in some areas. Sure, it sucked at launch a few months ago. But that was, you know, a few months ago.

Rant on Errata and what Wizards need to do to move forward.

I see that number tossed around a lot, but I don't think it is as extreme as some make it out to be. Remember, those 123 pages are for 30 different books and 30 different issues of Dragon/Dungeon - thats a lot of content to begin with. Now, of course, the counter-claim is that the PHB itself...

How much XP are half-HP monsters worth?

Yeah, go with something like S'mon. I've seen people who try to just treat them as worth half the XP, and it ain't pretty. I still remember an early adventure in Living Greyhawk where our party of level 1 and 2 characters walked into a campsite and found a troll. "It's cool," says the mod...

    Casters Suck? Please explain.

I don't think that is necessarily true. But... it is true that the DM should probably be adjusting for having a smaller party than normal. This should consist, in theory, of using fewer monsters or lower level monsters. It might be that he isn't doing so - maybe because he thinks the PCs are so...

    Is Wotc Slipping?

I'm still not sure what the double standard is, here. I didn't see Dannager's comment as pro-4E or anti-4E or related to editions at all. It was, as far as I could tell, simply about the foolishness of a game store owner who is more invested in personal bias over actually making good business...

    Casters Suck? Please explain.

And, honestly, it might just be you have bad luck. If you need at least a 10 to hit... you are still hitting (in theory) more than half the time. If that isn't the case, you might just have had a bad string of rolling low. It does sound like the other characters may have been playing...

    Is Wotc Slipping?

Fair enough. But my point, at heart, is about the scale. One person experiencing a single event (the closing of a store) and coming to a conclusion based on personal experience (I bet it had to do with poor business decisions made by the owner) remains very different from extrapolating the state...

    Is Wotc Slipping?

Just to be clear, I don't necessarily agree or disagree with either assessment. But either one involves making a very large conclusion about the state of an entire industry based on a variety of uncertain data. And that, as a whole, is a very different thing from saying, "That guy's shop failed...

    Rule of 3 3/21

Again, pretty much just a superficial distinction. I don't see how that has any effect on the content itself. Why ignore the setting books? Anyway, they did provide alternate builds and powers. But, as you note, for the PHB 1, 2 and 3. Three seperate books. Arcane Power supported PHB1...

Can Wizards turn around their D&D support?

So, just to be clear - since, a bit under a year ago, they replaced several key positions on the DDI team, leading to a transition in what DDI had to offer that was "a disaster", and is only now starting to bear fruit... you would like to see them again replace the DDI team so that we can go...

    DDI Monster Builder

For myself, I can accept WotC releasing unfinished software. I just wish they would be open about it. More communication is what is needed. As it is, they advertised a new monster builder that would let players create new monsters - something that it is currently incapable of doing. People...

    Is Wotc Slipping?

Eh.... I think it is a very different thing to draw a big conclusion like "4E is failing" from various anecdotes and short-term data lone... versus saying that a game store owner who actively steers customers away from buying products he is selling is probably somewhat at fault for his store...

    Rule of 3 3/21

Wait, so your objection is not with any actual logic or argument I've presented, but with the fact that others agree with that logic and awarded me xp for it?? In any case, you are certainly free to not respond, and it is true that others may be in agreement with you. But I still don't find...

Mearls' Legends and Lore (or, "All Roads Lead to Rome, Redux")

Yeah, I think what I was mainly trying to say was that, at least in my case, I found that having reliable balance - and, specifically, balanced guidelines for the DM - are elements that themselves can encourage and support creative play. Rather than being completely divorced from such activity.

Mearls' Legends and Lore (or, "All Roads Lead to Rome, Redux")

Well, yes and no. For myself, having a good way to handle creative abilities in a balanced fashion is a more preferable style of play than needing to handle them entirely by DM fiat, and having to either reject them outright or risk having them trivialize other options. But I readily get that...

Mearls' Legends and Lore (or, "All Roads Lead to Rome, Redux")

For my part, I find that is what helps encourage creativity. The DM having some guidelines (such as via page 42) that let them find easy but balanced ways to resolve a creative action is refreshing. Whereas in the past, when a player finds some creative use of a spell, it often feels more like...

    Rule of 3 3/21

Yes... and I'm guessing that almost entirely revolved around formatting rather than actual content or design of the material. In other words, had nothing to do with compatability, and everything to do with a simple change in how the material is presented. In other words, completely...

    Rule of 3 3/21

And... to use Psionic Power, you need PHB3, not any other PHB. And to use Arcane Power fully, you need the PHB, PHB2, and FRPG. My objection here isn't whether you approve or not of this theoretical shift, it is that this theoretical change has not actually occured. This is the same sort of...

Devil's Due - Paragon "adventure" is up

Eh, that doesn't seem like too much of a challenge given how strict a devil contract could be. Ah, it is true you have repaired the items! But as you see in clause 23b, any damage to the merchandise is considered a breach of contract, even if they are ultimate delivered intact! Of course...

    HoS: Not-so Epic Destinies Preview

Spending an extra healing surge in every fight of the day actually seems a bit significant, honestly. +2 to a secondary ability score is nice. So is regen 5 while bloodied. It can be important during the fight itself, and save 1-2 surges in post-combat healing. Neither are game-breaking...
