    What makes the classes unique?

I recommend you think about the roles, and which one(s) you most see yourself playing. In 3rd edition, I was all about the big numbers. The 4e ranger was really gratifying this way: at DDXP, I played Scalegloom Hall in Slot 1--one of the first 100 people in the world to pay to play 4e!--and...

Consumeable items in the new economy

I'm concerned, yes. The treasure tables we've been given show healing potions to be worth as much as 20% of the "monetary treasure" for a level. It's lower at the other two sample levels (7.5% and 6%), but it's potentially a significant portion of a party's income.

    What makes the classes unique?

Having played in demos, I can allay your fears significantly. Just because evey class uses the same system to determine how often they can use their abilities, what they do with those abilities is very different. Unified progressions are there so that the relationship between a skilled...

    Help me find the adventure

For an adventure: the giant ants (formians, perhaps) live at a location with a significant barrier separating it from civilization. Could be something as mundane as an ocean, or as esoteric as a featureless expanse of Astral Sea. The monsters are willing to do whatever it takes to get to the...

    Question about Black Dragon

A turn is from when Bill's initiative comes up to when he's done everything he can do. It starts with certain things (like taking ongoing damage) and ends with other things (like making saving throws). A round is from any given point in initiative to the same point when it comes around again.

    Residuum: A Re-Fluffing

Which takes all the craftsmanship out of it and reduces it to raw components. It isn't worth 1/5 of a masterwork weapon; it's worth a few cp.

Monstrous PC Races: Are They Even Possible?

You can easily simulate race tracks with feats. Like Savage Species forced a player to take all the levels of a monstrous class before taking levels in any other class, you can force a player to take racial feats at specific levels to gain the features of those races. Perhaps juvenile...

    Excerpt: Economies [merged]

The same way you keep them from resting after every encounter: a sense of urgency. Give them a quest where they won't have time to sit around for months while they wait for other adventurers to show up. Remember, adventurers are a rare breed, moreso as you go up in level. Even in a place like...

    Excerpt: Economies [merged]

Likes: Simplicity and excitingness--maybe. See below. Dislike: Poor return on sales. If a DM gives you a lot of cash and wondrous items, and only gives you new slotted items when it's a significant boost for you, you end up with a lot of value as you progress in level. If the DM gives you...

What class will be your first?

I've been tracking the breakdown by role, important for RPGA and other pickup players. So far (total votes=306), we have 28% leaders, 27% defenders, 36% strikers, and 9% controllers (wizards). I'm sure that much of this breakdown is due to the 3 strikers/1 controller dilemma, but not entirely...

    KotS Healing Potions

Those are the numbers I came up with, too. It's going to be hard to make myself willing to actually consume a potion worth 100 grand. That's 8% of the total wealth earned for that level--three of those per level and you're down about a quarter of your wealth.

Keep on the Shadowfell character sheet scans

    Con and Wis, definitely.

    It's No Longer A Joke

Since you can swap a paragon path for a second class, it would be reasonable to duplicate that progression at levels 31+. Allow characters to add a second (or third) class, paragon path, or epic destiny. Continue all mathematical progressions the same as levels 1-30, including monster...

What class will be your first?

I'll be DMing at home, but if my local RPGA group gets started again, I'll be bringing an elf cleric with ranger training to the table as my primary, and--maybe--an eladrin fighter with wizard training as my secondary. Leader and Defender are the two roles a party most needs, so in a pickup...

    Dragonborn MAD

To hit, yes. To damage, no.. Where did that come from? Draconic Heritage doesn't do that, and I can't find anything that does. Which is highly unintuitive (given that the dragonborn is the new half-orc) and effectively "wastes" one of the dragonborn's two stat increases. Also, fighters...

    D&D 4E 4E PrRC ~v2.7~ FINAL UPDATE May 29.08

Minor addition: For the warlord, you have "Other Known Warlord At-Will Powers, with missing mechanics: • Furious Smash • Viper’s Strike" You can do the same thing for the rogue's Riposte Strike. Bigger news:

    Dragonborn MAD

Looking at the dragonborn paladin from KotS, I'm a bit concerned. The dragonborn has two racial abilities that are keyed off its Constitution: Dragon Breath looks like it does 1d6+Con damage, and Draconic Heritage increases healing surge value by your Con modifier. The tiefling has a similar...

Keep on the Shadowfell and Rituals

Except that, logically, very few NPC priests will ever encounter the PCs, and those that do won't be exposed to them for very long. Unless it's a recurring or long-term ally, no NPC, by this logic, should ever have Raise Dead because it's pointless.

    Epic Destinies and Earth Giants

"Immortality," in the Epic Destiny sense, doesn't necessarily mean you don't die. We're discussing the dude a thousand years after he lived. I call that immortal. Reminds me of Final Fantasy games. I hated Charm/Confusion in Final Fantasy IV: When applied to a monster, it would deal 1 point...
