Which Class Would You Like to See?

I don't think 3PP should try to beat WotC to a power source. Primal, Psi, and Shadow are all but confirmed; Ki is strongly suspected. If a 3PP does their own version of Primal, no one will buy it after WotC comes out with theirs. So they should either try to use existing power sources, wait...

D&D 4E 4e playtest report...my effort to convert our group

Glad you enjoyed it! Just a correction here: that's exactly what should have happened. In fact, they should have had an extra action point left over had there been a 6th encounter. You start with 1 at the beginning of the day and get 1 more per 2 encounters.

    Level 22: an Epic playtest

This is awesome. I don't think we'll ever see anything quite like it (a class and race-specific power is highly improbable), but we might see a racial tiefling attack that does that. I love it!

    D&D 4E 4E PrRC ~v2.7~ FINAL UPDATE May 29.08

One more: On Pain of Death says 3[W] + Cha damage, even though the sample character doesn't have a weapon that does 1d8 damage (and it's an implement power). Reasonable guess with the warhammer--one of the earliest Design and Development columns said "'Yeah. I thought about going high Con and...

    D&D 4E 4E PrRC ~v2.7~ FINAL UPDATE May 29.08

The paladin entry is still missing Safeguard Smite from the Paladin Smites preview. Edit: Or is the assumption that Safeguard Smite became Shielding Smite? I'd guess so. Also, the fighter now needs "[NOTE: The pre-generated fighter from DDXP by WotC has +1 attack that cannot be identified at...

    Excerpt: Racial Benefits

The advantage of having "ranged bursts" be different from "close bursts" is that they fall into the unified mechanic that "ranged" attacks provoke OAs, but "close" attacks do not. That's also why you have some things that are "one creature in close burst 10" because "range 10," while being...

    Excerpt: skill challenges

Here's what worries me: Say the party has a half-elf warlock with Diplomacy trained. That's probably about a +11 Diplomacy at level 1. The sample encounter is clearly a social skill challenge. What's to prevent a party deciding, "The warlock's Diplomacy check is the best relevant skill in...

    Recharging Question

Why would you even have a :5: icon--representing the face of a die--if :5: actually meant 5-6? It doesn't make any sense. Since we've had only one officially previewed monster so far that has two rechargable abilities, and there's no point in having a "skip" if you only have one, there's...

    Conclusions after three play tests

I'd originally interpreted the fighter's mark differently, that "new mark supercedes old one" means that if the fighter marks a new creature, it ends his old mark. But now, rereading it, I know that phrase was in reference to the target, not the user. However, the paladin can explicitly use...

    Conclusions after three play tests

You can only mark one enemy at a time, and the fighter can only do it in melee. That left a lot of bad guys able to attack me, especially the slingers and minions in hard-to-reach spots. The spaces were large enough that the two defenders just weren't able to lock down very many kobolds--and...

    Gamer Zero Video: Magic Items/Alchemy

They've done that before, though. For instance, some of the books that came out right after 3.5 contained mistakes because they referenced the 3.0 rules instead. Heck, even the 3.5 rules weren't internally consistent even in the core rulebooks (two references to the same rule might disagree)...

    Excerpt: Racial Benefits

Wait--so because humans aren't at least as good as every race at every class, they're getting short-changed? Sure, dragonborn is a natural choice for paladin or warlord, because they both need Str and Cha. It's probably a decent choice for rogue, depending on how the various Brawny/Trickster...

    D&D 4E Is "Natural 20" an auto-hit in 4e?

It's what I was told at DDXP. Of course, different DMs told me different things on other matters, so who knows?

    Conclusions after three play tests

Multiple attacks don't help the rogue. Sneak Attack is 1/round only. Also, my experience with the ranger at DDXP is that you have to work pretty hard to stay out of trouble (I went unconscious in 3 out of 5 fights in Scalegloom, and actually died in the Delve); the rogue is no less squishy and...

James Wyatt hints at 5 new races in PHB2

Drow will be playable with or without FRCS; the difference is that without it, they're playable only out of the MM with a small number of options (probably class features but no feats). I can't imagine that they'll give a partial write-up for drow in the MM, a full write-up in FRCS, and then a...

D&D 4E Making the Character I Want to Play in 4e (Long)

Not quite--sneak attack specifies that you can use it only once per round, action points notwithstanding.

    Recharging Question

In theory, the recharge rolls are balanced. If they want a monster to get back all-or-none of its abilities, they'll make them all based on the same results. If they want the monster to get its abilities back in a staggered fashion, they'll assign them to different results.

    Gamer Zero Video: Magic Items/Alchemy

The amount of content in the PHB has been fixed for a very long time. Cutting the quasi-supernatural doodads in favor of other PHB material is good in my book. Although the preview characters were equipped with sunrods... are those no longer considered alchemical? Or did they get cut from the...

    Gamer Zero Video: Magic Items/Alchemy

3.5 didn't go there because 3.0 already did. Take a look at 3e's Arms and Equipment and prepare to be shocked. Bladed Gauntlets, Orcish Shotputs, and Mercurial Greatswords are just ridiculous, while most of the others are useless garbage. Edit: Ninjaed, but: I have, but not many and they were...

    Excerpt: Racial Benefits

Not necessarily. Cha is a dump stat for fighters (Wis is more useful to them), so you have to decide whether the human's other bonuses--an extra feat, an extra skill, an extra at-will power (the only way we know of to get one of those), and +1 to all defenses, are worth the stuff you get for...
