    D&D 3.x 3e-isms to avoid in KOTS?

It's not really a 3e thing, but something I've seen players have trouble with is forced movement. A Push doesn't have to be directly away from you, it just has to be further away than when they started. So you can effectively push on a diagonal. Long pushes (like Turn Undead) can weave...

So, what monsters should be Elite and Solos?

They can also be pets or the like. I can easily see multiple trained bears under one or two humanoid masters. I agree that golems should mainly be Elite. Similarly, so should a Warforged Titan or a Juggernaut. Anything at least Huge size should probably be Elite if not Solo (for practical...

KOTS, Lay hands, other and play.

And the Dragonborn Paladin is even worse, depending on Con heavily as well (for two racial abilities, as well as enough Healing Surges to blow on Lay on Hands). You pretty much have to choose one "critical" ability to skimp on. What I don't get is why Lay on Hands, which you can use Wis/day...

    Yep. Plenty dangerous.

    Rules Database vs. Core Rulebooks

For ~$60, the core rulebooks cost the same as 4 months of DDI. If you plan to play for at least 4 months, the core rulebooks are the better investment if your budget is tight. Of course, the best decision of all, if money is a problem, is stick with 3e until your budget loosens up. You should...

    Marking and AoE

I agree with this--the fact that a secondary creature might take damage doesn't mean that it's included in the attack. Similarly, if you use Force Orb on an unmarking creature adjacent to the marking one, I would rule that the primary attack suffers the penalty, but the secondary attack (should...

    Possibly..err...probably..a stupid question

And why have Recharge :4: :5: :6: when you could just say Recharge 4+? It made sense when it was one roll for all abilities, but now it doesn't.

    Possibly..err...probably..a stupid question

Good idea--although the only way to get one monster with 4 recharge powers seems to be to slap 2 templates with recharge powers on a monster that already has 2.

Minions. The DM knows 'em. Do the players?

There was a nasty Delve encounter that opened up with only 4 enemies visible; one of my party members opened up with Acid Arrow. Being minions, all but one died, and then the "real" enemies showed up.

    D&D 4E 4E PrRC ~v2.7~ FINAL UPDATE May 29.08

So assuming the KotS fighter is also correct (which it should be, unless they changed the rule after DDXP and then changed it back after KotS was printed), fighters get a choice of two abilities, probably correponding to two-handed style and weapon and shield style: Combat Challenge: Whenever...

    D&D 4E 4e spellbook questions

It would be odd if the wizard puts rituals in his spellbook, because other classes can use rituals but don't have one. There must be some other limiting factor that we have no idea about.

    Excerpt: Swarms

Which is exactly the kind of thing they're trying to avoid in 4e. You should never be dependent on a single type of character. It might be extremely helpful, but not necessary. This is a big leap forward from weapon immunity that most 3e swarms had (bat swarms at CR 2 are just evil), but it's...

GRZ 34 - Monster Roles Interview (Has new art, and various stat-boxes)

<Psst... don't say the "T" word around G0...> Seriously, Mike, you should really make posts with this kind of tone more often. Apologetic and forthright rather than defensive (for the most part).

    Cones and Lines

There's not much you can do with a cone that you can't do with a blast. I hated cones ever since the old Pools of Darkness game, and good riddance. Lines might be manageable.

    Save vs continuous damage/gluepot

Then it should have saved--the dragons we've seen so far have +5 to their saves.

    Excerpt: Swarms

No swarms of swarms: "A swarm is considered a single monster even though it is composed of several Tiny creatures. Most single swarms are Medium, but some can be larger." The constituent creatures must be Tiny. No larger, and a swarm is always at least Medium. Also note that it's exactly...

    Concealment?

Also: 1) Remember that cover and concealment are entirely differen things. 2) "Total Cover" was a term that was altered, being confusing. Now there's "cover" and "superior cover" (superior was formerly total), and there may also be "total cover" (meaning there's no LOE at all).

I'm putting my money on "bladeback behemoth."

    Standing up from prone...?

This is an overgeneralization. Some conditions last until the end of the turn of whoever inflicted it, some last until you make a save, some even last until the end of the encounter. Prone lasts until you stand up, and until you do, you grant combat advantage.

    About to pre-order, any advice?

Even without that, Amazon seems to be the best bet. Wal-Mart.com has a better base price, but it charges for shipping, and it's promising a very late delivery date. Go with Wal-Mart once they have site-to-store available on it, if you can wait a bit.
