Need advice on playing a beguiler

Is Bardic Knowledge really going to be that useful with only a single level of Bard? Isn't there a feat that gives something similar...? -Stuart

Need advice on playing a beguiler

I'd generally agree with that. Why the Bard level? -Stuart

Need advice on playing a beguiler

You're the utility guy. When faced with a problem that isn't best solved by bashing, the bequiler is usually just about the best there is at resolving it. Your spell list doesn't have much in the way of combat spells, but it is incredibly flexible with respect to almost everything else - and...

What is 'Quick Reconnoiter' used for?

In RAW, Quick Reconnoiter is a great feat. Spot and Listen checks are move actions. You don't get them for free in combat, and you can't make them while taking a double move or running. Most games I've played in, however, tend to ignore those rules to some degree - making the feat somewhat less...

    Tips for a Beguiler/Assassin build?

Ah! Good point. I haven't used this sort of build, but it seemed like a neat ides. Hmmm... is there any reason a Beguiler with Improved feint couldn't feint twice in a round - once as a move action and once as a swift action? -Stuart

    Tips for a Beguiler/Assassin build?

Beguiler does help with all of these, though. 1. Other things that help Beguilers: Clairvoyance, enchantment spells (Charming someone before a death attack? sure!), or spells that help you hide indirectly (spider climb?). 2. This is where I was making my suggestion for Improved Feint + two...

    Tips for a Beguiler/Assassin build?

Sure. Given the Beguiler's access to invisibility and divination of various sorts, though, that isn't necessarily a problem. That's one of the reasons that they make nasty assassins. I'd agree to take Beguiler to at least 6th level... -Stuart

    Tips for a Beguiler/Assassin build?

Beguilers make nasty assassins. Improved Feint is a must. I'd pick up Two-weapon fighting as well. Feint as a swift action, then make multiple death attacks. Every round. Ability focus is good. I wouldn't bother with Practiced Spellcaster for Assassin... but get it for Beguiler. -Stuart

The Curse of the 100gp Pearl

I suspect that Identify will either be gone or one of multiple methods of identifying magic items in 4e. As time has gone on, there have been an increasing number of ways to do this in 3.5 - I think the designers have realized that relying on Identify too much is a bad idea. -Stuart

Need a good melee char-must be old!

Another way to go would be Swashbuckler 3 and then advance as a Paladin or Fighter (or Duskblade or Hexblade, even). Wear a Mithril Breastplate and get Combat Expertise. -Stuart

    Undead Ur-Priest?

Also, I have to say that the idea of a Ur-Priest Lich is totally awesome. -Stuart

Need a good melee char-must be old!

Some additional options: Duskblade - a high Int will help, and you'll be getting a lot of damage out of spells rather than strength. Fighter - make use of the Combat Focus feat tree (PHBII?) that keys off of Wisdom. Paladin - Go Charisma/Wisdom heavy. Pick up Divine Might to compensate for a...

Anyone want to hazard a guess as to what a Martial Controller would look like?

Why level 17? Why not level 5? Is this more powerful than a fireball? (Also, 4e will have 30 levels - extrapolating up from level 17 isn't ludicrous... but, really, extrapolate in both directions.) -Stuart

Anyone want to hazard a guess as to what a Martial Controller would look like?

I see your objection, but I think it misses some possibilities. What if we have a martial artist who can (in 3.5 terms) as a full round action move at 50 and make a trip attempt every time he leaves a square with a foe adjacent to it? Extrapolate from there. -Stuart

Anyone want to hazard a guess as to what a Martial Controller would look like?

Martial Controller? I'd go with Monk - focus on tripping, grappling, disarming, stunning, and such. Replace Flurry of Blows with an area of effect attack reminiscent of Whirlwind Attack. Make threatened squares difficult terrain or something. Add in some movement boosts and range isn't much of...

Honestly? I don't think that is a consideration for WotC. There are almost certainly more people who like Drow than there are elf-haters. -Stuart
