Low-volume music in the background can liven things up a lot. I'd suggest stuff like the OSTs from A Fistful of Dollars, Kill Bill Vol. 1 & Vol. 2, and stuff like that. Change genres to suit your taste/need. :D

Black Company d20 has some kick-ass rules for large-scale combats. They're a little thick, but once you sort them out I don't think you can do any better.
