I am starting work on my first 5e monster (well a progression of three monsters) and was looking for some guidelines. Is there a recommended progressin of Hit Dice and damage by CR? Should there by a limit to the number of special abilities a monster has? What is a good way to determine AC?

Anyone else think a dip in a fighting class for Great Weapon style can lead to a fun little burst for a war cleric when they don't want to use a spell? Especially with a great sword and divine strike.

Of course you can't respec in AL once you have hit level 5. I think of war cleric like dragon sorcerer, you get that little boost at the beginning to help get you to the point you don't use it anymore (a high level sorcerer probably shouldn't be taking many attacks vs their AC)

I like this, but right now it is a table-by-table thing. Lately about half to a third of my spell selection is themed. I find it much easier on a sorcerer than a wizard though. I feel my party expects me to have staples like fly, invisibility and haste, regardless of my "theme."
