I agree that it's pretty hard to rationalize buying what amounts to be a 20 dollar advertisement. I would have much preferred they released this material on their website.

I'm not a fan of 4E and I don't plan on switching, but I will say this for Worlds and Monsters... It has hands-down the best collection of landscapes I've ever seen in any D&D ever. Like I said, I'm not planning to jump to 4E, but if Eberron artwork gets similar treatment, I might pick it up.

Well, given that you think of it as a responsibility and not a privilege, you probably would be bugged by it. D&D is a wonderful experience that ought to be shared with anybody interested. An active recruitment strategy furthers that. More than that, neophyte gamers are a lot of fun to have...

I agree with this point, but I also think the D&D community would cease to exist in the current form. I compare it to Betrayal on the House on the Hill: There's a big group of people around me who play it, sure, but it's not exactly a centerpiece of the gaming community.

Yet the OP does have a good point in that controlling the amount of Magic Items in the game gave the DM a relative degree of control over how difficult an encounter would be without adding more monsters or increasing their hit die.

Can you speak on any kind of authority or from experience in stating this? Because as I understand designers create material and developers playtest and edit that material. At least, that's the way magic works.

Personally, I wanted Shifters. Then again, there is a shifter in Desert of Desolation... You know, I'm not really surprised at their choice. Then again, after stuff like making Succubus devils, Hextor getting replaced with Bane, and the striking of gnomes, I think I'm too disinterested in 4E...

I think they should keep the Unicorn as a good creature and put the Bloodlance in as it's evil counterpart.
