    D&D 5E (2014) Lackhand's Dragons

I'm about to use my first dragon(s) in my home campaign, and I thought I'd talk a little about how I'm tricking them out to increase their solo threat. I've seen the new Hobbit movie. I want them to be unabashed city smashers, eventually, but more than that: I want them to be, well, dragony...

    D&D 5E (2014) Easter Eggs in 5E

I was thinking it was for Godzilla :) The staff of healing illustration in the DMG is a totem pole of grimacing faces. I can't shake the feeling it's supposed to be a physical 1-10 pain scale.

D&D 5E (2014) How Often Do You Have NPCs Join the Party?

Betimes. Mostly they join up as experts, men-at-arms or porters, pets/mounts (hey! If it talks, it's an NPC!), or employers. Many of the more mercenary foes they fight offer their services under terms of parole, and the occasional captive goblin gets brought along as a guide, albeit briefly...

    Catastrophic Dragons in 5e

I agree! Actually, because they're so mythic, the inclusion of wyrmlings weirds me out -- what is this acknowledgment of the biological life cycle of the Tornado?! That said, nothing forces me to use 'em. Good show!

    D&D 5E (2014) Drow "Sunlight Sensitivity" workarounds?

For those who listed fragility as a limiter for the sunglasses solution (implying: yes, sensitivity is optical in nature, yes, it's okay to use equipment to work around limitations within, uh, limits), here's my take on 5e fragility...

    Fragility and Equipment Damage

5e doesn't have great support for substandard equipment, nor for gear that is not ruggedized for the Adventuring Lifestyle. Let's fix that as unobtrusively as possible :-) We'll hook into the rules on "breaking an item" from the DMG and on the rules about "PC lifestyle" from the PHB. Every...

    D&D 5E (2014) Drow "Sunlight Sensitivity" workarounds?

I'm a little confused, but I don't want to be too intrusive, so... Y'know, please take that into account. Should I read this as saying that the goggles would be helpful, but completely removing the penalty is going too far? If we assume disadvantage in 5e is analagous to a -5 in earlier...

    D&D 5E (2014) Drow "Sunlight Sensitivity" workarounds?

Post-turkey posting, hiding from the relatives :-) Because you quote some of my posts, I feel like this post was pointed at me, and contains a lot of "ur doing it wrong" that I don't feel is fair. Happy turkey day :) Around page 2 or 3 (edit: or in reality, at the bottom of 4!) I realized you...

    D&D 5E (2014) Drow "Sunlight Sensitivity" workarounds?

Granted I went a bit far lumping all of the mundane solutions together (gear/gear with in-world training cost/enormous training cost in rare level-based resources), am I to read this as "Goggles don't work by GM fiat"? That's fine and it's a way out of my conundrum, but I find it unsatisfying...

    D&D 5E (2014) Drow "Sunlight Sensitivity" workarounds?

Thanks for the interesting conversation, guys; sorry I haven't been around. It feels like there are a few schools of thought here around the "sunlight sensitivity" issue: I allow drow but their sunlight sensitivity is ontological; only way to remove it involves changing the nature of the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Drow "Sunlight Sensitivity" workarounds?

(Maybe this belongs in Homebrew? Not sure!) One of the characters in my 5e campaign is a drow wild sorceror. The party has been doing a lot of (daytime) wilderness adventuring. The player and I are both getting a bit bored of him always rolling everything with disadvantage. So: here are some...

    D&D 5E (2014) Savage Attack and Critical Hits !!!

The word "either" means "one of"; the "totals" are of each one of the two dice rolls, but it's not jus doubling your damage. If it were, it would say "you can roll damage twice and use the total sum" (or something!) They're said very similarly, but the meanings are different. Good gaming!

D&D 5E (2014) What are your world Races?

My campaign is pretty standard fantasy, but a bit off the track for d&d. I have: Humans. Elves of 3 types: Sea Elves, which are high elves, Wood Elves, and thirdly Fomor the foe-elves, mutated and fishbelly-pale. The first two are blue-green in coloration; the fomor use the stats of drow...

D&D 5E (2014) PHB Spells: Crown of Madness?

Was it a wizard spell in 4e? It kind of smells like warlock to me, but I could see it having gone either way.

D&D 5E (2014) PHB Spells: Crown of Madness?

As everyone has learned by now (it's in 5Basic!), charm person received a few nerfs in 5e in order to limit its combat usefulness. However, the 5e PHB includes a new-to-me spell, crown of madness. As far as I can tell, this is the in-combat substitute: It's slightly, but not exaggeratedly...

D&D 5E (2014) Idea for removing the ability score cap...

To start with, I've already discarded the base attribute score (so my character sheets have +3[x] instead of 17 (+3), +3[ ] instead of 16). This might make what I'm describing unclear. Sorry, if so! :) In my opinion, the way to go past the cap (if that's what you want to do!) is to turn it into...

Diverging from Ability "Scores" to Ability "Bonuses"

I don't think the score is the only way to get this behavior. We only know that a Strength of 18 is a +4 modifier to strength rolls (or is it +3? Or +1 to hit and +3 to damage -- forgive me, it's been a while since I AD&D2e'd :) ) by rote and table lookup. Once we've done that table lookup in...

Diverging from Ability "Scores" to Ability "Bonuses"

A way I've always wanted to try this is you still roll 3d6 to generate stats, but you can read the results off of the dice. I've put exactly no thought into this: each 1-2 on the die is a -1, each 5-6 is a +1. That generates the same spread as B/X characters; might do the same thing with 4d6...

D&D 5E (2014) Are you going to miss AEDU? (And did you feel a lack in the playtest because of it?)

I agree, this is an awesome rogue to me. I'd still like to see a way (without magic items) to give rogues a climb speed or equivalent. But I firmly believe that's doable. Maybe it's a feat dip you end up taking later (rangers could benefit too! And fighters! And...); maybe it's a class feature...

Diverging from Ability "Scores" to Ability "Bonuses"

Many games do this; for instance, I'm a FATE-fan, and it just has bonuses; white wolf's Storyteller just has bonuses, etc. During the d20 glut, the Blue Rose/True20 system did this for D&D-alikes. Worked fine there. Just retaining the ability bonuses would remove a simple stumbling block that...
