When you're an "evil" person, what non-evil term do you use to describe yourself?

The spell isn't "what does he think of himself" the spell is "Detect [Alignement" - and that alignment, in a DnD world, is based on absolute standards set by the powers that grant the spells. Evil is a yes or no question in DnD fantasy, unlike in our world where it often (but not always) is...

So, what if a player does a 'weak' build?

    1. Thats not a weak character at all. You should be getting in a few sneak attacks now and then and if you are dealing with the scouting/traps then you are fulfilling the Rogue's role in the party. Maybe not as well as a single classed Rogue, but you are better at being a rogue and a magic...

    OGL Swords & Sorcery?

Ditto. The Defender and Wildlander are wonderful substitutions for the Monk and Ranger for a low magic/supernatural game.

When you're an "evil" person, what non-evil term do you use to describe yourself?

Practical (ends justify the means after all) Focused (without the distraciton of thinking about others) Smart (as opposed to the stupid people who sacrifice themselves for others) Driven (may occasionally have moments of regret at doing what it takes to get what he wants, but not usually) Most...

    Newb with the Newb questions

Given that you haven't played in a long time I would suggest playing the Fighter for simple ease of play to start out. A Rogue/Monk is a cool idea, but you may want to start out a little more straight forward than that. What books do you have access to for building a PC? That will greatly...

    OGL Swords & Sorcery?

Classes from WotC sources Upon reflection I really think the best PC spellcasting class for an SnS game, if you really want one, is the warlock (Complete Arcane) or possible the Archivist (Heroes of Horror). Both potentially have a desperate feel to me - one from making dark pacts with demonic...

Sandbox style: How to handle challenge levels

Who said worldbuilding was wasted? Not me.

    OGL Swords & Sorcery?

You are absolutely correct, and when I wrote that earlier I forgot about the Gray Mouser. I still think that minimizing the magical abilities of the PCs is more in keeping with the genere than having any kind of spellcasting class. Your Incantations or CoC system idea is very apt for that...

How many xp-awarding challenges do you have in your game sessions?

It really depends - some weeks its 2 or 3 and some its 4 or 5. I said 4 because thats probablly overall a good average.

    OGL Swords & Sorcery?

Hobo is correct in saying that, with effort, you can take DnD and alter it to work just fine with Sword and Sorcery; but IME over time it becomes a lot of trouble and if "balance" is a concern for you you can quickly get in over your head when you remove standard spell casting from the system...

Thanks Roudi. Yeah even once I was told that I still had trouble navigating it. The scroll bar kept, for no apparent reason, going up when I was telling it to go down.

The information about submissions seems to stop in mid-sentence on the page to which you link.

help me brainstorm for my new military/horror campaign

Threshold was a mediocre TV series but had an interesting idea. Long story short: aliens send a singnal/probe that transforms DNA and rewrites human brains to have them begin the process of terrafroming earth into a world like their own. For your game picture this - Nazi scientists pick up a...

    Are you optimized?

No. Focusing on one thing or a small number of things. A rogue who focused on Open Lock and Disable Device and Search would still be optimized at opening trapped barriers to what he or she wanted.

    Beginning DM

Second the DMG2. I wish I had read those chapters years ago. It also has Saltmarsh, a great town for you to use and play around with if you need it. My only other suggestion is to regularly post around here (probablly in General) about your plans and elements of your campaign world. Even long...

    Pre-Gen Con WotC Press Conference

We have heard a lot about the new Digitial Initative for the e-versions of Dungeons and Dragons. They have been accepting submissions. Dragon and Dungeon are a hair's bredth away from their final print issues. Nothing definative has been said yet about when its all going to happen. It seems...

    Are you optimized?

Occasioanally around here the subject comes up about planning out your PCs and inveitably someone points out that in real life people often do not become what they set out to be and that characters should progress just as organically. Of course thats true of a lot of people, but it is true of...

Sandbox style: How to handle challenge levels

Start by telling them the nature of the world. That there are places they can go that will be not only dangerous, but almost instantly deadly for them but that you will try and warn them ahead of time in game. Clear definitions of the world around them help. For example: "Those are the...

Did anyone here come into gaming *through* computers?

The first RPGs I played were CRPGs, back in the days when Final Fantasy was on the nintendo and Super Nintendo, and later some on PC. I wouldn't say they were what brought me to table top gaming, it was something I always wanted to try and never got the chance to until later in life, but they...
