D&D 5E (2014) What level did your MOST RECENT campaign get to?

The most recent one that ended was a 5e conversion of War of the Lance. We reached 18th level at the end of the chronicle.

D&D General Tracy Hickman: The third founder of (modern) D&D?

Wasn't Assassin's Knot also based on events? Wasn't it published a year before DL1? Wasn't it written by Len Lakofka and not by Tracy Hickman?

D&D 5E (2014) Everything You Need To Know About Witchlight

“These violent delights have violent ends And in their triumph die, like fire and powder, Which as they kiss consume. The sweetest honey Is loathsome in his own deliciousness And in the taste confounds the appetite. Therefore love moderately; long love doth so; Too swift arrives as tardy as too...

D&D 5E (2014) Grand Master of Flowers: Speculation on James Wyatt's October Book

"There are seven huge ancient gold dragons of highest abilities and loyalty who serve as guards, companions, and advisors to Bahamut. He seldom (10%) is without them. (A sage tells of encountering Bahamut in the guise of an old hermit, with seven canaries singing sweetly as they flitted nearby...

D&D 5E (2014) Wizard academy providing “all spells”, how strong?

There are very few NPCs above 10th level in my game (usually reserved for heroes, villains and patrons). I allow wizards to copy spells of levels 0-5 into their spellbooks without cost. Spells of 6th level and higher are much more rare since very few wizards reach that level and most of those...

TSR Who's running the TSR3 social media accounts?

I think you've given away your agenda. Not that anyone has any doubts in the first place. [Edit. This thread moves so quickly that I didn't see the Mod posts.]

D&D General The Problem with Evil or what if we don't use alignments?

The problem with threads like this is that the argument devolves into two main camps. Without alignment, you can't tell the difference between good and evil. Alignment doesn't work and has no place in the game. I'm calling shenanigans on both arguments. You can easily run a game without...

D&D General The Problem with Evil or what if we don't use alignments?

Devils are fallen celestials. Demons represent corruption. They're the closest thing classic D&D has to Great Old Ones. Yugoloths are creatures created to fill the alignment chart, but they work well as creatures representing loss and despair. No alignment necessary.

TSR TSR3 Blames Widespread Pushback On WotC

My kids were still teenagers when I ran a game for them that began with goblins raiding a local farming village. Their response was to talk to the goblins and find out why they were raiding. I already had a backstory, complete with no goblin children, in case they decided to hack and slash their...

TSR TSR3 Blames Widespread Pushback On WotC

My last post was much more snarky and in your face than I would have liked. Every story I run has three plotlines running through it. Alpha Storyline: What were doing in this story. I prefer that players give me ideas on what to develop (semi-sandbox style). Beta Storylines: The individual...

TSR TSR3 Blames Widespread Pushback On WotC

It requires the consent of those involved. Other players do not get a heckler's veto on their fellows backstories. That said, we don't spend a whole game session on romance. It's in the background, just like elderly aunts and rebellious cousins. It takes a few seconds, a few times a playing...

D&D General The Problem with Evil or what if we don't use alignments?

If they are sentient and free-willed, I would kill them to protect the innocent. If they are sentient, they are not always evil. Some of them somewhere could be good, or at least not evil. I could see a character of mine killing the larvae, but it would be a source of moral anguish for them. In...

TSR TSR3 Blames Widespread Pushback On WotC

Sexuality, but not sex itself, is played out all the time in games I run. My favorite game system is HERO 6e (sorry WOTC) and the characters have dependent NPCs and other character hooks that come into play all the time. My daughter is gay and she often has a girlfriend who gets in trouble, for...

TSR TSR3 Blames Widespread Pushback On WotC

I don't play it up as creepy. Just a wink and a "give me a shout if there's anything else I can do for you." Our games are also PG-13. Flirting is G or PG. Anything else is fade to black, relight the scene when it's no longer R or X.

D&D 5E (2014) Any good alternatives to "How do you want to do this"?

As a player I hate that trope. I do not want to come up with a unique death for every mook I drop. I dislike being put outside my comfort zone. When GMing, I am very descriptive. I want a break from that when I'm playing. My usual response is something along the lines of "They're not dead...

Dragonlance (+) What Would You Want From 5e Dragonlance?

I'm not generally a fan of restricting player options. The original DL did not write out any of the original PC races from the PHB with the exception of the half-orc. I don't want to yuck on anyone's yum, nor to thread crap, so I won't go into detail on my feelings for the setting or the...

D&D General The Problem with Evil or what if we don't use alignments?

I'm not in favor of removing it from the game now that it has no teeth or mechanics to back it up. Some folks like it and use it. I'm not in favor of removing things that do not affect me one way or another. None of our games have players who engage in evil acts. It's never been an issue for us.

TSR TSR3 Blames Widespread Pushback On WotC

I can't believe sexuality NEVER comes in anyone's game. No server or waitperson ever flirts with a customer. No NPC ever expresses even mild interest in a PC. No one is ever hired to find someone's wife/husband/lover. No NPC is motivated because their significant other has been fridged by the...

D&D General The Problem with Evil or what if we don't use alignments?

I stopped using alignment back in 1982. I haven't looked back. Most RPGs do not use an alignment system and get along fine without them.
