I think using the CR system to gauge the challenge to PC's is fine, but I've totally scrapped using the XP method from the DMG. I use the more old school method found in Unearthed Arcana. My players don't mind at all, as long as they get to loot the bodies of their fallen foes.

Thanks..that's pretty much what we were thinking, but our brains began to itch. And yeah.. 40 would run into the PL 10 power cap...so those extra points would be "wasted". But this works! Thanks!

I like a broad spectrum of music, but it's funny you mention this because I've been listening to the radioIOambent channel on iTunes all afternoon while prepping for tonight's game. Very smooth and evocative; provides me with some background noise w/out being intrusive. I dig it.
