D&D General Has D&D abandoned the "martial barbarian"?

That's the books. In the comics and movies however....

Med. Fantasy Equivalent of a Smart Phone

Nearly anything can function as a magic dumb-phone, but for a smartphone, probably something like a magic scroll or hand-mirror that can shift what it displays.

Anyone Else Tired of The Tyranny of Novelty?

For sure i am. Nothing annoys me more in the media space than subversion for the sake of subversion, or contrarianism for the sake of contrarianism.

    D&D 5E (2014) Disarming spellcasters?

While you technically could, i find there are good meta reasons for not doing so, namely that it encourages carrying a bunch of focuses (looks dumb imo), and that the only way to catch people out before they do this is to spring it on them as a surprise, which comes across as a lame "gatcha".

D&D General What are the "dead settings" of D&D?

An interesting discussion is definitely Planescape and Spelljammer. I've personally always envisioned these as "meta settings" more than settings of their own (i.e to me "Planescape" is just the outer planes of Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, or whatever), and that seems to be the direction wotc is...

D&D General Has D&D abandoned the "martial barbarian"?

Barbarian does fine as a class if, as they do, you lean into the limitless possibilities of it being a "primal power" themed warrior. If you stick purely to no-magic-not-even-spirit-blessings, the design space does potentially become smaller, which is what the thread is about.

D&D 5E (2014) How on earth is this balanced?! Twilight cleric, more in-play evidence

That's not exactly a weakness when Twilight Cleric can also attack and heal itself at the same time while maintaining Twilight Sanctuary while also having top-tier defenses. Oh, and past level 6 they can do all that with concentration-less Flight, because of course.

D&D General Has D&D abandoned the "martial barbarian"?

I think there's definitely design space in all 2/3/4 however you define it of the most martial classes for an explicitly anti-magic subclass, mechanics similar to counterspell, dispell magic, anti-magic field, and/or some type of spell-turning that turns such effects back on their caster.

D&D General Has D&D abandoned the "martial barbarian"?

While Conan does a lot of stuff depending on what the plot demands, he is a "barbarian" due to his background and how it is perceived by "civilized" peoples. In 5e, this is represented by the "Outlander" Background, that can indeed go with any class, in theory.

D&D General Has D&D abandoned the "martial barbarian"?

If you merged the Scout Rogue and Berserker Barbarian into one class, you'd get as decently close enough as i think you can without getting more complicated.

D&D General Has D&D abandoned the "martial barbarian"?

I don't think the idea was that evil witchcraft was somehow also divine in this concept. But my point here isn't to debate the finer points theology, but to explain that the history of distinction between the divine supernatural and the "other" supernatural, is ancient, and hardly a "DnDism"

Both the bible itself, and the koran and torah present the miraculous works of gods, angels and prophets, and warn against witchcraft and/or paganist ritual and recommend punishments for it. These ideas are very old indeed.

    D&D 5E (2014) Adventuring on the moon?

Several DnD settings (Forgotten Realms for sure, and others) (and pathfinders "Golarion") present the moon as inhabited in some way, and the Elder Evils campaign Atropus: The World Born Dead has you face/travel to an evil sentiant moon for the climax.

D&D General Has D&D abandoned the "martial barbarian"?

Well, and Islam and all the connected religions too. But in fantasy, there are certainly fantasy settings and stories where it isn't the case, but I'd hardly call it a "DnDism". You could say that DnDs specific framing of it was popularized through it's influence on later fantasy, though.

D&D General Has D&D abandoned the "martial barbarian"?

Well, that's a concept that comes straight from real life. There has always been a distinction between the miracles of saints, and unholy sorcery/witchcraft.

D&D General Has D&D abandoned the "martial barbarian"?

The word Barbarian has its origins as an insult, but the positive use of the term that exists mostly in fantasy fiction (such as DnD) comes from Conan writer Howard, and others of his era of fantasy, who wrote stories where being a "savage" was a source of strength and conviction, and being from...

D&D General Has D&D abandoned the "martial barbarian"?

The English word "Barbarian" has Greek roots, but other languages, such as Chinese, have different words with the same meaning: Those outside of civilization, outside of cities, hierarchy and order as we see it. However, in DnD 5e, this general type of person is represented by the "Outlander"...

D&D General Has D&D abandoned the "martial barbarian"?

Yes, but i think that is a good thing. The Barbarian doesn't need to (and imo, shouldn't) be casting spells, but by opening the class up beyond "strong guy" into (to use 4e words) a fully Martial "Primal Power" character, you can get a great many character concepts that still fall squarely...
