Gabe (Penny Arcades) take on Essentials Red Box

Quite so. But I think the debate--and in some few cases, outrage--about Essentials, and 4e in general, is predicated on whether or not the changes are in fact improvements. From the small glimpses I've seen about Martial powers, feat organization, and even the magic missile...I'd say yes.

Gabe (Penny Arcades) take on Essentials Red Box

Yeah, this thread is pretty incredible. "Someone who we think is cool agrees with our opinion, so now we KNOW our opinion is right." And the posts about people worrying about WotC destroying their old books? Hilarious! (the first hundred or so times, anyway.) Listen, I think the Penny Arcade...

    D&D 4E 4e powers and unfun moments

Just wanted to say thanks for the responses. There's some great advice in there, and though I'm not convinced the power structure doesn't put too many resource-eggs in one diceroll-basket, I am convinced that the Reliable idea was a bad one.

    D&D 4E 4e powers and unfun moments

I see what you mean, but my Healing Strike encounter power isn't an encounter-ender like Dominate was. I don't want an auto-win move for every fight--I like a challenge, and the battles in our 4e campaign have been really fun, both in terms of story and tactics. Its just that the more...

    D&D 4E 4e powers and unfun moments

Just to be clear--I don't think 4e is broken. Imperfect, yes. Broken, no.

    D&D 4E 4e powers and unfun moments

To cut to the chase, my question is this: does it unbalance the game to make all powers that have no effect on a miss Reliable? I play in a weekly 4e campaign--a great mix of RP and combat. In the last session, we were in a pitched battle with a dozen foes who surprised us, and things looked...

Fortune Cards: and randomized collectible cards come to D&D

Well, not exactly. I don't want them to fail because they present an option that other players want. That would be an odd position to have. Honestly, I think that if people want to play a TTRPG with cards instead of dice, or both or whatever, then they should be able to do that. Hell, if...

Fortune Cards: and randomized collectible cards come to D&D

Which is why I for one will be hoping they tank. Hard. For goodness sake, you want something random to happen in your game? Make it up! Next they'll be selling card packs of things your character would say if injured, or for what the weather will be that day. I play TTRPGs in part because...

    Congratulations to you both!

    Do you like character building?

I'll answer the OP in a sec, but I have to say that I must be doing something wrong, 'cause wow, my experience has been completely different than yours. I'm playing a 7th level Battleguard of Tempus that I ported over from our 3.5 game--admittedly, before I truly understood how 4e worked--and I...

Gamma World Box Set Sneak Peak on I09.com

I can't wait to see 4e Gamma World, but I loathe the idea of cards and booster packs in my RPG. I can only hope that the cards in the set will also be on a dice table somewhere that can be updated as new cards come out.

Why Must I Kludge My Combat?

Agreed! But I think in the context of someone feeling pissed off about a 1-2 rnd fight, favoring story over the dice is a valid solution. Also, even if done, it should be done extremely rarely.

Why Must I Kludge My Combat?

True, but a DM isn't just a rules adjudicator and reader of boxed text--a great DM is a great storyteller as well, and understands the basics: character, plot and pacing. In other words, roll the BBEG's save behind the screen, and instead of announcing to everyone the number and declare the...

Any sheets out there that calculate power attack, etc?

Thats a great idea--instead of having the sheet recognize that PA is being used and changing the attack and damage mods directly, I can have the on/off switch fill separate cells that the attack and damage mods refer to those cells when calculating totals. So if PA, or any other condition or...

Any sheets out there that calculate power attack, etc?

Wondering if anyone has either made or stumbled across any sort of automated 4e character sheet that can calculate power attack bonuses, action point bonuses, spells like Weapon of the Gods and Song of Courage--basically things that affect attacks and/or damage conditionally, and can be stacked...

Modules, it turns out, apparently DO sell

Your point would be valid if the material produced was in the realm of a few hundred pages. But 5000+ pages of material, a great website, a top notch and dedicated staff, etc...these things don't exist without cash flow.

    Unconfirmed: More Layoffs at WotC

Sure...if you'd like to manage your workforce down to zero. Without commensurate hiring to balance the layoffs, periodic layoffs are simply not a sign of corporate health. Now, if WotC was somehow automating their work flow, or otherwise making themselves so much more efficient that they...

The Return of "Basic" and "Advanced" D&D?

Agreed. The OP seems quite reasonable. Herschel, IMO your post is crossing a line of civility. On topic: I think it's an interesting question, and I can kinda see how PF and Advanced share a more simulationist bent. Maybe the biggest similarity is that 4e is more of a gateway into the...

Serenity: Why am I GMing this?

Wow, that's pretty damn cool. I LOVE Firefly and Serenity, but never thought to pick up the game...until now!

What D&Disms have you never liked?

Wow, I guess I didn't realize how much I loved D&Disms until reading through this thread. Chump to champ, Vancian magic, D&D clerics, finding better magic items (and selling/trading the old stuff), tracking resources, class roles...love 'em. I will cop to disliking the reliance on magic...
