Great weapon fighter is a "trap"? Forked Thread: I don't optimize.

Minions with 1hp - Can anyone justify this?

As far as as I'm concerned, the attitude "if its not in the Rulebook, then its impossible" is just as bad as rules lawyering. Its a roleplaying game, not a computer game, and by definition the rules should be fluid and robust enough to handle whatever the players and/or DM decide they want to...

If you don't like minions - how would you do it?

Apologies to anyone who has already read this from me in other threads, but the OP asked... Minions have 1/2 the hp of a monster of the same level, (or as close to the same level as you can get, rounding down). Characters who successfully hit a minion with any attack multiply damage by x10 at...

Minions with 1hp - Can anyone justify this?

Unless thats what the DM and his or her players want to do, of course. Then it is exactly that. Or a system by which to pretend that they're fairy princesses, or talking broccoli, or in a Conan and Gandalf buddy movie, or whatever else it is that folks want to do. Thing is, D&D used to be a...

Minions with 1hp - Can anyone justify this?

This is one of the best defenses of the concept I've seen. If only the RAW agreed, then the minion mechanic wouldn't bother me so much. But it does bother me, so my solution: Minions have normal hitpoints, but characters do x10 damage on any successful hit. This puts the success vs a...

    Green Ronin and 4E

Hey, Chris, Your statement is logical and reasonable, and your position shows a lot of heart. It couldn't have been an easy decision. I wish you guys the best of luck. You've made a fan out of me. MrG

    Rules question--unconscious ally

I second the motion for an official ruling on shared space--for both enemies and allies! Until then, the FAQ implies a pretty good solution, if I understand it correctly: Someone can enter a square occupied by some (or something) prone. When the prone person (or thing) wants to stand (or...

    Rules question--unconscious ally

Thanks, thats what I thought! But then after I had moved into my ally's space, (and attacked), our cleric moved up and healed her, which is where we got a bit befuddled. Since she was no longer helpless after the heal, but still prone, we figured I should take a penalty to my attacks since I...

    Rules question--unconscious ally

Hi! If one of my allies falls unconscious during a fight, can I step into his or her square? And if so, what happens when the unconscious ally is healed? Does one of us just take a 5' step to get clear? Thanks, MrG

Core classes. How are they balanced?

I play a human fighter in a long running campaign that makes a great tank. He has the Goad feat from Complete Adventurer, which is a nice taunting tool, and he controls a good portion of the battlefield with his Boots of Speed, his heavy flail (yeah, he can trip), and judicious use of things...

    Feats for sneak attack

I like the Exalted feat Sacred Strike. It increases your SA die from d6 to d8 against Evil opponents. (You still use d6 vs Neutral and Good.) I'm not familiar very with "Exalted", but I believe the only prereq is Good alignment, (and obviously the ability to sneak attack). MrG

    Rolling Abilities

I agree--if the DM made such things rain down from the sky every other day. But its a perfectly appropriate once-in-the-life-of-a-character, build-a-quest-around concept. MrG

    Rolling Abilities

I totally see where you're coming from, and I agree. Personally, however, I would just use that 12 attribute as a roleplaying hook, take every opportunity to raise that attribute when I level, and if it looks like the character isn't pulling his weight at higher levels, then go on a quest for...

    Rolling Abilities

In defense of rolling dice At the risk of having a "grognard" label thrown at me, (tied to a heavy brick), I would say that rolling dice is always better, because random is better. And why is random better? Because its a game, and more specifically to me, its an improvisational storytelling...

Selling items : illogical rule ?

I might have been ninja'd on this point, but D&D isn't a combat game--its a roleplaying game (that includes rules for combat). And if someone wants to play the role of a adventurer who has a side gig as a traveling merchant of some sort, then bully for them. Hell, the system should be robust...

Unexpected TPK: Unbalanced, bad circumstances, or fluke?

Setting aside the nasty tone, which is completely unnecessary in an otherwise civil and interesting conversation, it seems like you're assuming that: The characters had faced fire beetles before, and therefore knew exactly what they were up against. Or The players were using meta-game...

I've made up my mind...for now.

The sheer volume of information in 3.0/3.5 is pretty overwhelming. For instance, I'm always wondering if that perfect feat is right around the corner, (in the next splat book), and things like that. And every DM I've ever played with has limited the game to Core plus some specific other...

    PHB Classes: What needs love?

Couldn't disagree more. The wizard pays for his or her versatility with lower hp and AC. You can't equate fighter powers with wizard spells--one is rooted in the physical abilities, knowledge and training of the fighter him or herself, and the other is based on the wizard's mental ability to...

Very first thoughts after reading 4e PHB

Again, I have to say that that seems perfectly right to me. I don't mind learning a few different rules when dropping my fighter and creating a wizard--in fact, I guess I prefer it, so that things don't feel too homogenous across the board. I would say all of the changes--from 3.0 to 3.5, from...
