Help me decide when to set my Greek campaign!

I think the ancient period is better if you want to use the gods. But if you want mythic Greece, go for that... ignore the historical record. If you want Classical, I'm going to be one of those guys being an annoying correctionist. ;) As in, 475 would be shortly after the Peloponnesian War...

    Character Creation Rut

Well, I don't know if it would work, but what about a cleric or even a paladin who decides to join and try to more fully "convert" them? :) On second thought, that's probably a bad idea likely to lead to conflict. But I was thinking a character with a bit more of a conscience might act as a...

Which books do you read again, and again, and again...

Well, I don't think I've read ANYTHING a dozen times, but a few things that come to mind that I've re-read quite a few times: - The Hobbit - some of the Garrett PI novels by Glen Cook - The Hero and The Crown by Robin McKinley - Starship Troopers, by Robert Heinlein - The Saint in New York, by...

Easy question, Coup de Grace & PA ??

Something to think about here: I VERY MUCH doubt the designers of 3.5 considered how changing Power Attack for 3.5 would affect this situation. In 3.0, the problem would have been less severe since you couldn't get that doubled bonus. I think that since Sneak Attack is allowed it's not...

Any books with rules about hiring fighter-class mercenaries?

Do you feel that the hiring rates in Mercenaries are really on the ball? I thought they were way too high. A 1st level fighter hiring himself out as a mercenary - let's say to a large company, so with 1/4 the listed salary - earns 20gp per day. That's 600gp in a month, 1200 in two. That's a...

    hardcover vs softcover

Trade paperbacks are usually better bound and printed on better paper. Which should mean they last longer. I think of them as midway between paperbacks and hardcovers. I do have some in my collection... I don't mind them so much. When I first started reading the Malazan series that was the...

In combat, can your PCs fight from atop a corpse?

My DM imposes a balance check (a pretty low one, I think) to avoid falling when entering a square with a corpse, but otherwise doesn't impose penalties. And horse-riders (like my PC) can jump over them. :)

TORG d20 (and any other 'lost systems' you'd like to see)

Torg is coming back. WEG was, essentially, out of business, but the company was taken over by someone. They're releasing books for their D6 system (D6 Fantasy, D6 Adventure, and D6 Space, plus supporting products) and are planning a new edition of Torg. http://www.westendgames.com/ is the...

Help me! I'm afraid to kill my players!

Well since one of your players have weighed in now maybe there's no point in posting, but what the heck... First, yes, as someone said - try to make sure that some small curing potions (cure light wounds) or alchemical salves of some sort are dropped as treasure so that if the cleric is knocked...

Star Wars DVD's will feature new alterations!

I feel the same way as Jeremy. As far as including the originals, I would have to disagree - I do want to see the originals on DVD, but I don't think that putting them on the same discs is necessarily a good idea. Take Lawrence of Arabia. The Star Wars films are not as long as that film, but...

Tell me about Tri Stat Games?

My comment may come to late, but I'll weigh in anyways... I'm in a Silver Age Sentinels (Tri-Stat superheroes) game that's been going for almost a year now. I've found the system to be very good - my personal comparison with Hero is that I find it simpler and lacking some of the flaws I...

    [April] What are you reading?

And, if it wasn't obvious, the Tawny Man books follow the Assassin series rather directly. (It's about Fitz, that is.) I just finished reading The Book of Atrix Wolfe by Patricia McKillip. Another excellent book by her which once again reminded me of how beautiful a prose stylist she is...

    Farscape: Peacekeeper War

I agree with you that some of season 4 was not the best. They changed some of the cast, which took some getting used to (I found the new female character annoying for a while) but the ending episodes - particularly the three-parter "We're So Screwed" - were phenomenal.

    How Good Are These PDFs?

Eater of the Arcane is a freebie and pretty cool but on rpgnow it and the Necromantic Feats PDF have "NOT VALIDATED FOR SALE" slapped on them. Anyone know why? It seems to be in place of a download link.

    Weponless Monk PrC

And (IMO) the only way you'd get a 2-for-1 bonus on Power Attack from a staff in the first place is if you gave up the attacks from one end.

D&D 3.x Why did they nerf the "sleep" spell in 3.5?

The loss of a hit die on average is kind of bad, but knowing that you'll never roll a 2 or 3 is good too. Sleep can still be a killer spell; in the last game session I played in, we were attacked by a pretty large force (for our 6th level group of 5 characters) of fighter-barbarian orcs, some...

Feasability of having dragon wyrmling in a solo party?

Why not go with brass? It's true that it would remove tension about whether the wyrmling would grow up mean or not, but if that isn't your focus, it's a heat & fire oriented dragon which as a wyrmling would be smaller than a red. Making the egg grow in the presence of fire seems cheesy to me...

    Armor Class Feats

I thought it interesting that your armour focus feats - the one where you pick a category for your bonus - are EXACTLY the same as some feats in AEG's Mercenaries. If your intention is to give two-handed weapon characters some defensive options, then I like your Two-Handed Weapon Defense feats...

XP Awards for Driving Off Opponents

I have to agree with Pax, that not awarding XP unless the enemy is taken out in combat is contrary to the way the system is supposed to work. Then again, I also agree with Will - story or session-based XP awards are SO much simpler than micromanaging the XP award for this many CR X creatures...

Just finished the 3rd Black Company book...

Yeah, I'd have to say that losing Croaker's voice was a loss. I didn't like some of the other annalists - Sleepy in particular. The writing style changed to become, to my mind, a slower slog than the clear read of the early books. One of the bits I remember clearly about the Plain of Fear is...
