Someone mentioned Simon R. Green upthread; his Hawk and Fisher books would qualify, I think. Personally, I don't like them that much, but the three-books-in-one-volume softcovers are a good length read for the price.

Marl tries to look unalarmed as he moves further into the room, to get a better look at the white cloth and figure. Is it a figure with white cloth only covering part of its body? Could it be the individual in white robes he saw earlier in the mining camp?
