D&D 5E (2014) Passive perception Yay or Nay?

Which is practically required to make stealth useful. If everyone is rolling perceptions then the multiple d20 rolls coming up destroys the balance the game devs put into the stealth mechanics for surprise and bogs the game down for in combat hiding. If somebody wanted to give the players some...

D&D 5E (2014) Passive perception Yay or Nay?

Passive Perception = Perception bonus plus 10. +5 more if one has advantage on perception rolls When a being is hiding, the entity rolls stealth if it is in a situation it can. Then when a party might spot it, the entity's hide result is checked against the passive perceptions of those on the...

D&D 5E (2014) So do enough monsters have ranged attacks this editon?

Forked thread... Do other folks think 5E foes too often lack ranged attacks? I know I was kind of disappointed that there didn't seem to be any fiends that had eldritch blasts especially after many of their 'classic' spells got clipped. The CR rules DO make adding in ranged attacks very easy...

D&D 5E (2014) RE: Tarasque vs. 5th lv. Wizard scenario - how does Wizard know to use Acid Splash?!?

The only reason I can guess the Tarrasque is lacking because it's supposed to be a wake up call to the DM that modifying monsters is part of the job, especially when players are reading the MM. DMG has the rules on what abilities matter to CR and how to tweak monsters to better serve the DM's...

D&D 5E (2014) Passive perception Yay or Nay?

So how are folks feeling about the passive perception system? While I'm digging it, it seems possible others might not. It definitely makes hiding far more feasible since one doesn't have to worry about a whole group of folks shooting dice hoping for high numbers. But that alone might irk other...

    D&D 5E (2014) Next Playtest Bestiaries

Are those to hit vs HP numbers still equitable in the CR tables by any chance? There is a definite sliding scale to CR based on defenses and offences, and so I'm wondering if they stack up as functional equivalents after calculating CRs.

    D&D 5E (2014) eldritch knight action surge

It's much more about being able to make that Fighter/Mage out the gate with no muss or fuss than trying to max DPR.

D&D 5E (2014) The nontraditional classes as enemies

Once I get the CR rules understood firmly, I'll be using lots of Eldritch blasters, kinda wished more fiend types had that as an attack than other grab bags of spells. Uhg, that's pretty much doubling their HP since psychic is very uncommon damage.

    D&D 5E (2014) Templates in the MM

Just describing the critter right out of the MM critters as possessed should be fine. If it is an area where it NEEDS an immunity to survive, just give it that immunity, players will probably know that if it lives in an acid bog, acid won't hurt it. Elemental of more sizes might have been...

    D&D 5E (2014) Templates in the MM

Depends if you give them the racial abilties or not. Notably the Hobgoblin' martial advantage spike damage puts the MM hobgoblin at CR 1/2, even though their other stats seem more in line with CR 1/8th Guards or Nobles.

D&D 5E (2014) The Bard's Combat Inspiration is Messed Up

"rolling a Bardic Inspiration die and subtracting the number rolled from the creature’s roll. You can choose to use this feature after the creature makes its roll, but before the DM determines whether the attack roll or ability check succeeds or fails".

D&D 5E (2014) The Bard's Combat Inspiration is Messed Up

The Bard ability affects the raw roll, not the modified roll which determines the hit or miss. Being able to know if it is an assured hit is a significantly stronger ability. DM: "The Gnoll's attack die shows a 12, are you affecting it bard?"

D&D 5E (2014) Clerics of Life: Broken, Bad Design, or Working as Intended?

Eight man, 5th level party? Fifty dead foes over nine rounds in cramped area? With all healing expend? Sounds good to me. Bottlenecks and area effects are how adventures do their stuff. DMG has combat options for sneaking and forcing ones way through the defensive lines of foes as a Bonus Action.

D&D 5E (2014) The fall from grace of the longsword

I think the PHB's improvising weapons rules should be fine without disadvantage. 1d4 damage for striking with the flat of the blade for bludgeoning sounds better than disadvantage since many folks have figured out stacking disadvantage is no big deal.

    D&D 5E (2014) Templates in the MM

Dracolich and shadow dragon are both templates. Mynocoid's Spore Servant is another template.

    D&D 5E (2014) Templates in the MM

The monster CR rules in the DMG kinda take care of the need for a lot of templates. You make the changes you want and check to see which CR parameters have changed. In fact I think you have to Re-CR monsters you template anyways so any listed templates are just a laundry list of what to give the...

D&D 5E (2014) CR 0 monsters, As DM do you use lots, a few or avoid deploying them?

The low end of the monster spectrum is refereed to as CR 0, being worth 10xp if they pose a threat to PCs, with CR1/8ths being worth 2.5 as much XP. But the question is how are DMs making use of these lowest foes? Do you use them a few times when the party can't handle other foes, ignoring them...

    D&D 5E (2014) Hit dice used

You might want to have everyone write their 1/2 HP threshold (rounded down) on their character sheets. You might have some sort of channeling for ranged healing ability, BUT it can't heal folks past their 1/2hp value.
