    The "Build"

In real fantasy world any adventuring group would allow only those persons to join who have skills they need. This, however, contradicts what players of D&D find fun. "I don't want to play a cleric" "Well that's what our group is recruiting since your previous Sir Heals-a-Lot died". IMO it's a...

What's the problem with bringing PCs back from the dead?

It's not like death without resurrections was the end in RPGs. It just means you have to make a new character. A mere inconvenience :p Or have you never seen a D&D player whip out the previous characters identical brother in 5 minutes? ;)

What's the problem with bringing PCs back from the dead?

I thought molonel was being sarcastic. Isn't coming back from the dead pretty damn common theme in myth, legend and fantasy?

    Dealing with powergamers

Additionally, we're quite likely to find errors in the characters. Quite often when a player has created an 'invincible' character, the rules have been bent.

What's the problem with bringing PCs back from the dead?

I've noticed with my players that this seems to be mostly annoyance on the DMs, and not the players, part. Even if resurrection is available, my players are really pissed off when their character dies. I've not put any limits on resurrections, but players themselves retire characters after 2-3...

    The "Build"

How would you classify my group, then? We play both core-only and those zillion-book campaigns in D&D. We enjoy both. Don't be too hasty to judge.

    The "Build"

Applies in real life, too. It's good to have a plan on how to improve yourself - like someone said on these boards earlier: the organic characters can be found working at fast food joints. Of course you can't be sure how the character turns out, and whether you get to take everything you want...

    Dealing with powergamers

I've rarely seen a D&D character who's 'thing' is being an archer switching to melee. It happens, but not a lot. Likewise, after a certain level sorcerers don't bother carrying that trusty crossbow with them. Tricked out archers melee attacks are just so weak, like are a sorcerers non-spell...

What would you do if someone died?

Just out of curiosity, would you stop any other activities you did with your best friend? (Watching movies, jogging, whatever..)

We went from 5 saving throws to...64!

Because combat is very important in D&D. In an efficient system (not games system, but any system) each component should have resources allocated to it according to its importance. Thus attack rolls and saving throws, two very important parts of the game (the first let's you kill, the second...

We went from 5 saving throws to...64!

Why are attack bonuses a different system from skills? Sometimes simple distinctions make the game work better, even though you could do without. I think that keeping skills and saves apart is justified, considering the difference in play. Saving throws might be similar to skills in some...

Have you ever seen a wizard not maxed out?

Maybe all single-class wizards do that, but multi-class characters might be pressing even for that 11 or 12 int.

    LOTR from a gamer's perspective

Yeah, I think the real gamer reaction would be: Gandalf: "The ring is altogether evil blah blah where Sauron put all his power blah blah.." Frodo: "O RLY?!?" Gandalf: "YA RLY!" Player: "I put on the ring and proclaim myself the Lord of the Rings! Sooo .. what abilities do I get .. damn I had...

    LOTR from a gamer's perspective

Why didn't that happen when Frodo was climbing the stairs near Minas Morgul? Or at any other point Frodo was high from the ground? Remember that if the eagles had been used, the ring wouldn't have had a lot of time to work on Frodos willpower. Or if it's as easy as you say, why didn't it do...

    How's the Love?

If someone insisted on that kind of things in my game, a save vs. disease would be most they get out of me :)

    LOTR from a gamer's perspective

If they didn't have knowledge about Saurons capabilities, sending the ring there on foot seems equally st00pid. I mean, if he might've had radar-SAM batteries for the eagles, it would seem incredible he didn't have halfling detection capabilities. In any case, the eagles could've been easily...

    LOTR from a gamer's perspective

If the eagles were so unwilling to risk their behinds in the first place, why were they near the great battle to begin with? Spectator sports? Only explanation is that they were there to see if humans needed help.

    LOTR from a gamer's perspective

... and Hobbits are a race that would never have anything to do with adventures ;) Just saying, stereotypes aren't really strong in Tolkiens works. Hobbits supposedly don't adventure, but then slay a dragon and beat the ring. Elves and dwarves can't be friends - what happens to Gimli and...
