S/Z: On the Difficulties of RPG Theory & Criticism

No, sir. MY games are shallow. :D

"Illusionism" and "GM force" in RPGing

But if the Gm continues to add content to delay, or prevent, Players from reaching their destination, that is annoying, too. Also... Metaplot! Aaaarrghhh!!! ;)

Beginning to Doubt That RPG Play Can Be Substantively "Character-Driven"

"These" games acknoweldge that Gm Force is a thing, and can be a decisive factor in a well run campaign, and provide rules for this. The Gm may be adversarial in a "good" way, by the rules, without using Illusionism to calibrate encounters. The Doom pool in Marvel Heroic. Soft & Hard Moves...

Beginning to Doubt That RPG Play Can Be Substantively "Character-Driven"

I don't see a problem either way. Gm or players must refrain from thinking, elaborating, in their own heads? The point is a roll was botched. Before that a partial success Introduced the argument. AW has Gm rules for that, also a Gm must prepare Fronts in andvance, to be deployed in game...

The Thread In Which We Rant

Dear players: can You please consider my npc as if They were real, reserve them the same treatment I do with your PCs? At least for the scenes in which they are present. Also please can you refrain from asking me things OOC, while you can veicolate those same arguments thru my npc, so to not...

What is at stake for the PCs?

@pemerton Definitely yes. The main plot is ok, something has to be filled in by the Gm to make it work properly, perhaps, but the scenario bits, the collateral fluff, are very interesting. It is based on real life events I had never heard about.

What is at stake for the PCs?

Yeah I remember you talking about Cthulhu Dark. I have a copy as well. We left Trail of Cthulhu, the italian edition, translated, waiting for ages on the shelf, and I've been asked to run it and see how it goes. Well, first off, let's say a Pc starts with a Profession, and has three main...

What is at stake for the PCs?

On the "ineffective Pc" side of the argument: That is by no means a fault of the system but an issue with inexperience of character generation in order to create Pc ready to investigate on their own. I informed the players, as game suggests, to take a wide variety of skill between them to...

What is at stake for the PCs?

(...) The game provides Pc with starting Drives (curiousity, thrill of adventure, sense of justice, vengeance, overcoming apathy, etc) to propel the will to investigate if needed, and Pillars of Sanity, personal creed as statements that players make up by themselves: "Logic will prevail on...

What is at stake for the PCs?

Sure. "Bland & inane" because of poor Player choices during char gen and attitude during play. Not everyone, not all the time, but mostly. Pcs are actually very capable from the get-go in this game, Gumshoe's Trail of Cthulhu, and I admit I like it a lot. Usual problems IME with new Pcs: not...

What is at stake for the PCs?

I'm running the introductory adventure for a Trail of Cthulhu game, provided in the core manual, which actually revealed itself being a proper scenario of Cleveland, summer of 1938, based on real life murderous events. Pcs have chosen their own basic drives during char gen, for the explicit...

Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder 2e: Actual Play Experience

Meanwhile I read on Paizo forum that this issue had been discussed one year ago, with many solutions provided by posters, without an official rule, AFAIK. From what I read here by @Campbell, the rules say it's up to the Gm to make the transition between Exploration mode and Encounter mode...

Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder 2e: Actual Play Experience

Ok, I read it. My question now is: why roll for initiative since neither lurker or heroes decided yet to take action?

Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder 2e: Actual Play Experience

I understand that initiative is rolled when the opposing parties are present and ready to take action. Where is the discrepancy?

Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder 2e: Actual Play Experience

From what I read, PF2 can better manage a more casual encounter approach, compared to the needed full-on adventuring day in 5e, in regard of martial-casters balance and consuming resources. Is that right?

What are the sources for Warhammer Fantasy Role Play?

Jabberwocky (1977) by Terry Gilliam, starring Michael Palin, indeed inspiration for the dark humour farcical fantasy tone.
