    Woo-hoo! Heroes of Horror preview!!

Archivists are basically European hermetic occultists. Occultism casts spells by invoking the various secret names and titles of God, angels and demons, ancient deities, and other divine beings. It channels knowledge of secret divine lore through force of will to create magic. It also extremely...

    Charles Ryan on Adventures

If someone wasn't interested enough in the core book to buy it, chances are that they wouldn't be interested in buying supplements for it either. You might gain a few sales of supplements, but probably not nearly enough to recoup the lost sales of your core rulebooks. Atlas games tried what...

Mutants and Masterminds 2E - I Have It

I moved to a different city a few years ago, and when I go back to visit I run a super hero game. Supers is perfect for this sort of thing, because it's simple to swap out characters, and the archetypal stories tend to be episodic anyway. Unlike fantasy, which tends to like long quests or...

Mutants and Masterminds 2E - I Have It

Are there any new game mechanics, powers, or under the hood explanations that make you think, "hey, that's damn cool." I've heard that there's a combat action called Blocking in it. How does that work?

    Charles Ryan on Adventures

I'd wager a guess that 90% of all games don't even bother looking at non-WotC books in any meanigful sense. Adventures are not profitable. Adventures that can only be bought by a small subset of all potential customers (ie. adventures that are only useful to buyers who own and are using a...

    Mage:the Awakening is out. Opinions?

:D This thread is quite atypical for ENWorld. It's more of an RPG.net flamwar that's migrated here. :p I like the distinction between rotes and spontaneous casting. I suspect that one of the main reasons why people are concerned about it being too much like a D&D spell list is that the book...

PA, Philadelphia area looking for group

    1. I live in Wilmington, which is probably a bit too far from the city for most people. 2. I'm okay with D&D, but I'd prefer to try something a little different, like Arcana Unearthed/Evolved, d20 Modern, or Mutants and Masterminds. 3. I've never GMed D&D3e, but I've GMed other games, and run...

    Mage:the Awakening is out. Opinions?

True. But imagine how interesting the game would have been if it were tied to Atlantis and Babel and several other destruction/arrogance myths in addition.

    Charles Ryan on Adventures

True, but Ryan is suggesting that not making adventures is the reason why many d20 publishers are struggling these days, a rather ludicrous proposition. Yes, the drop in module publishing is correlated with drops in d20 company profits, just like murder rates are correlated with ice cream sales.

Mutants and Masterminds 2E - I Have It

There's an extensive series of design diaries by Steve Kenson on the Mutants and Masterminds website. If you haven't already looked at them they're the best place to start, starting with "Ten ways to play M&M 2e today". The game mechanics in play are essentially the same, with some tweaks, but...

Mutants and Masterminds 2E - I Have It

<seethes with envy> :D Are any pictures using the 1e archetypes in the book, such as the atomic brain, or the picture of the mentalist telekinetically "arm wrestling" the powerhouse? How about the pic of Murder Man and Butcher Boy (the man in a suit with the psycho kid with meat cleavers) I'm...

    Other races -Iron Heros

Another approach would be to give nonhumans the two backgrounds, but remove the normal benefits of being human, a feat and 1 extra skill point per level. So an elf would get the elven racial benefits and two backgrounds, but at 1st level would have only 1 feat instead of 2, and would have 1...

Which comes first? D&D or Geekiness

I voted that a geek will seek out D&D, but I think the answer is both. Not only does it bring out your inner geek, but it also tends to prevent people from becoming less geeky. Any strongly inclusive subculture tends to reinforce its primary traits, which in D&D's case is geekiness.

You put in Soul Knife but missed the Druid? ;) Druid, Artificer, and usually Monk are the only three that come to mind.

    Loviatar toys with Epic characters

When I saw the title of this thread, the phrase "Loviatar toys" gave me some rather uncomfortable images, until I realized that "toys" was being used as a verb, not a noun. :heh:

    Best recent campaign setting?

Atlas Games recently published Northern Crown, which is a mythic fictionalized colonial America, complete with natives, colonists, natural scientists working magic through discovery (and its pioneer, Benjamin Frankin), the descendants of the old viking colonists, pirates, etc.

    Iron Heroes/The Psyhic's Handbook

I find the Psychic a bit weak compared to D&D spellcasting classes, but that's more a comment on the severe power of D&D spellcasters than on the psychic. The Iron Heroes skill group mechanic would probably work well with the way powers are organized in IH. The Psychic could treat each talent...

    Mystic theurge vs pure wizard/cleric

If it's diversity of abilities you're interested in, then an Arcane Hierophant might be a better choice. Druid 3/ Wizard 2/ Mindbender 1/ Mystic Theurge 2 / Arcane Hierophant 7. You'll have the spellcasting of a 12th level druid and wizard, wild shape as a 10th level druid, and the abilities of...

Magic of Eberron Player's Guide to Eberron (maybe) Complete Psionic (probably) Spell Compendium - I own many of the spells in it, but having hundreds of spells from dozens of books and magazines together in one volume is well worth the price, especially if the broken spells are fixed. Pact...

    Dragon Compendium Table of Contents

What were the battle dancer and the savant like? I don't remember those from the old dragons. The deathmaster was essentially a divine spellcaster focused on the undead, right?
