I was just curious if this might be some of the reason why you don't like when guys play female characters.... a negative association from your MUDding days, finding that some guys only played female characters because they knew they could get lots of help from other players (mainly guys)...

All I can remember is the Warlock Sceptre - it lets you spend charges to increase the eldritch blast damage. There is the Chausible of Fell Power which gives a bonus to eldritch blast damage as well, but both of those are in Complete Arcane though. I don't remember any offhand from MIC.

Okay, I can see the point then - it seems to be a matter of extremes. If the players are actively enjoying RPing their characters, which means sometimes RPing conflict among their characters (which might include PvP), and all are on-board with handling it in a mature fashion, then it is cool...

yes! thanks for expounding on that point - - it does take a mature, level-headed, friendly group to responsibly handle that sort of RPing / character development.

But, wait now - he said "if the players are cool with it...."; so the players don't mind if their characters are "being jerks to each other"; they are fine with RPing their characters in that way. Why does the DM have to get involved? The DM "suffering" sounds like a little bit of an extreme...

Hide skill? i think if someone is watching and he has to move to get to a hiding place, then the check is made at -10; he is rushing to get to a hiding place quickly so there's some big risk involved. also, there's a rule of thumb that's something like : the hiding place distance has to be 1...

if it helps, there is a 'review' of the module here i see a glaring lack of a cleric in that party....yikes! maybe the new player could be gently nudged toward playing the healer, with some assistance in the form of wands of cure x wounds, etc. i don't know much about a Knight's mount, but...

keeping in the spirit of your ship-bound 'encounter' and the broken rudder... how about some problems with the wagons, and some skill challenges to repair a broken axle? lifting the wagon and removing the wheel (Strength checks), repairing the axle (Knowledge:Engineering maybe, i dunno)...
