    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next info from PAX Prime + answering questions

The thing is, if it is stated in L&L, it's treated as a final decision by the community. While at a situation like PAX, with 10-15 people in the audience (the panel hadn't been advertised outside of WotC's site), they are far more likely to talk about the ideas and concepts they have floating...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next info from PAX Prime + answering questions

So, I actually asked about the druid, and what the difference is between a druid and a nature god based cleric, and they said they're working on the place of the druid in the world. There would be some overlap between the two, but they wanted druids to have their own distinct place in the...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next info from PAX Prime + answering questions

They're not disagreeing with you, it's the "hey, we want you to test this specific part. We're not ready to unveil the solution we have to this other thing yet." A lot of the criticisms of the playtest are "it's not complete" or "it's not enough!", which, well, it's an alpha test, with 2 years...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next info from PAX Prime + answering questions

Unsure, but I suspect the next playtest will answer this question. Based on the generic tone of conversations, I suspect they will scale up some.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next info from PAX Prime + answering questions

Don't think so? They've said in the past that their goal was to have every class ever in a PH1 within this PH1; either as a core class, or as a playable concept from a base class + theme + specialty + feats + etc. As sort of stated earlier, that's the hope. But, they also don't want class...

    D&D 4E What 5E needs to learn from 4E

Except it takes several feats to even get to the damn trip button. :-p I suspect these are not folks who heavily played core 3.0 / 3.5 fighters. Or they just like the "swing, deal damage, move on" aspect of a fighter.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next info from PAX Prime + answering questions

    1) Regarding the paladin -- no news yet. They're still working on the story behind the paladin and the mechanic that would come from that story element, which would be unique to the paladin. All classes have to have an archetype, a significant place in the world that can't be easily created by...

    D&D 4E What 5E needs to learn from 4E

True, but players almost always know how their powers will work out, and it's far less risky to use a power than to use an improvised attack. That's part of the psychology part.

    D&D 4E What 5E needs to learn from 4E

This is more of a human psychology thing rather than a rules mechanics bit. In terms of straight mechanics and adjucation, 4E is, (IMO, and I feel like if you took it down to ease of DM'ing and number of checks to make, objectively so), better at ruling and adjucating someone jumping on a...

    WotC's Yuan-Ti vs. Your Yuan-Ti

One of the other things mentioned at PAX Prime was that the backgrounds of the characters would be modular. For instance, the typical D&D Minotaur takes its background from the mythological source, IE, a player might find a single minotaur in a labyrinth. However, they would put a sidebar of...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next info from PAX Prime + answering questions

So, I went to all of the seminars for D&D Next at PAX Prime, and got to have several chats with Mearls and crew in between panels (I was enforcing in the Dungeon at several points), and there was a TON of info about how the game is being designed, etc etc. A lot of what is floating around these...

    The Tragedy of Flat Math

The game has pretty flat math from what they said. Magic weapons basically increase the chance you have to hit relative to monsters PERMANENTLY, IE, a +1 magic weapon gives you a higher chance to hit monsters of all levels, and is not expected to be had in the core system. There are very...

Pax Prime seminar 2012 juicy news!

There should be rules on how to create such a template in the core books. But one of the things 5E is moving away from is "crunch for every little variant created for you." That led to the glut of prestige classes / base classes / feats / etc. They'd rather teach DMs how to make balanced...

Am I the only one who doesn't like the arbitrary "boss monster" tag?

One of the things they have discovered in their testing is that 3.5/4E folks actually have a lot in common in what they want, but get put off by how it is presented. Monster creation in 3.5 and 4E is actually very similar, except they threw in some wonky numbers (Natural Armor Bonus, HD bonus)...

Am I the only one who doesn't like the arbitrary "boss monster" tag?

Heh. Based on the conversations I had, it sounds like the XP value will be the kicker (IE, the XP value of that monster will be higher than the "average" creature of that level). This also allows you to have the concept that a dragon of a certain level is more powerful than an orc of a certain...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rangers in 5e

At the classes panel at Prime, it was stated that should they do rangers, (which they most likely are), they would go back to their LOTR / Aragorn roots, and not be much like the Rangers of 3/4E.

Am I the only one who doesn't like the arbitrary "boss monster" tag?

As an aside, the "boss" monster question was asked at PAX Prime, and the answer was "we're just using it right now as an easy way to delineate between monsters of a certain level that are more powerful than others." The "boss" monster tag will most likely be removed prior to actual launch, but...

    Why have dissociated mechanics returned?

So as someone who spent a lot of time (2+ hours) talking to the developers at PAX Prime (I was enforcing many of the rooms they were in, and went to all 5 panels, including the two dungeon panels that basically no one knew about)...I can definitively state the following 1) This version of the...

Am I the only one who doesn't like the arbitrary "boss monster" tag?

Ahne...that description of your players seems like it is complete metagaming, as opposed to anything else. Only someone fully metagaming would complain if the attack bonus didn't match the HP. (or similar issues). Am I missing something?
