    D&D 5E (2014) "Cloak" and "Dagger" were...

If my backlog of Gaming & BS Podcast is right, it was from around this time last year, with Chris Perkins talking about them at least year's gamehole con.

D&D 5E (2014) How cursed are cursed items?

Personally, I would allow players to use dirty tricks using cursed items-- One person's trash is another's treasure, after all. Besides, I like to encourage creative thinking. Having players take advantage of what's usually a bad item is perfectly fine. Besides, I know a number of paladins who...

D&D 5E (2014) DM HELP! My players killed Strahd too easily!

"Specific beats general," is the rule you want. Misty escape is a specific rule, and therefore overrules the general rules of how death works. As there's no rules for dropping a creature past zero beyond death saves and Massive damage, and misty escape is a more specific rule than death saves...

    D&D 5E (2014) Volo's Guide to Monsters: General Discussion.

Unrelated, but this is an interesting bit of lore (I mean, it's a standard piece of Yuan-ti Pureblood lore, but it's still a good way of framing how most people would react to it) http://imgur.com/b2BzPDC

Can't say I'm surprised. Cloak hint = Amber temple, if I recall Dagger hint = Flying around the sword caost looking at Urthgardt burial mounds.

D&D 5E (2014) Lost Mines: Map Size Shenannegins

Eventually, if I do a scale map of Ravenloft (And maybe Wave Echo cave), I think I'm going to go with a 1"-10' scale, and then use small based minis. Perhaps even just use the half sized minis from a Risk Board I have. Generally though, I prefer Theatre of the Mind as I tend to find with a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Volo's Guide to Monsters: General Discussion.

I like that hobgoblin wizards are justified in the book. And I agree that an INT bonus is a justified stat increase on a hobgoblin. I do wish they had a little more mechanical incentive to be a battlemaster rather than a wizard, but at least they're as good at being a BM as other races not...

D&D 5E (2014) What do you like, and what do you not like about Volo's Guide to Monsters? (spoilers)

For me I can sympathize with the point, but it's for a different reason than what you listed. A big selling point for me was that it'd have stats for goblins and orcs. My assumption was that they would be built like the PC races we've gotten previously, and would be balanced for regular use in...

    D&D 5E (2014) Volo's Guide to Monsters: General Discussion.

The only downside of playing a hobgoblin wizard is that the stereotype of hobgoblins seems to me to be more of a Battlemaster fighter over a gish wizard. As much as I dislike racial abilities that discourage playing against type, a race that doesn't have much in the way of encouraging you to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Gamehole Con D&D News

Actually, now that I mentioned it, I'm curious what they were going to do with SCL if it was successful. I mean, it seems like they wanted it to be important, one of the tag-along NPCs appeared on the cover of the SCAG, and its BBEG is listed as a possible fiendlock patron. The obvious answer is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Gamehole Con D&D News

I agree. Perhaps he'll shed some more insight to the canonical timeline of the Realms, and how AL fits into that. Perhaps he'll give some insight as to why we're all of a sudden having references to Greyhawk in the last few books. It seems the things we get the most straightforward answers to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Gamehole Con D&D News

Like I said, he'll create some vague hooks for us to grab on. Sometimes these allusions may not be apparent at first (such as an off hand remark that Cryptic Studios doesn't like it when they have to represent giants in their games), other times they'll be readily apparent, but misdirecting. The...

D&D 5E (2014) What do you like, and what do you not like about Volo's Guide to Monsters? (spoilers)

The overpowered/underpowered warning was only on the kobold, orc, Yuan-ti, and goblinoids, if I recall. The Tabaxi is just presented as "Yeah, this race is fine. He might not fit the tone of your game, but he's fine mechanically."

    D&D 5E (2014) Gamehole Con D&D News

If it's anything like last year's, I doubt we'll hear anything substantial, but we'll get some vague implications about the upcoming products, and we'll perform rampant speculation as to what it could possibly mean.

D&D 5E (2014) What do you like, and what do you not like about Volo's Guide to Monsters? (spoilers)

I'm planning to pick it up tomorrow, but from what I've read around the web: like: -Monster lore is always nice -Monsters are unique and interesting, so adding them will add new complications to a fight -Lairs, though I haven't heard too much about whether they have maps or not. I'm more in...

    D&D 5E (2014) Volo's Guide to Monsters: General Discussion.

Hobgoblin stats: +2Con +1INT, Darkvision, proficiency with two martial weapons of choice, and the ability to add a modifier equal to the amount of allies nearby (to a max of +5) when you fail an attack roll, saving throw, or ability check 1/short rest. It's a weird one. It's not bad, but it's...

The 10 Player Races in Volo's Guide Revealed

1/minute seems more elegant, but it's also a break from the more traditional short/long rest paradigm, while basing it off the assassination feature explains it neatly by tying it to a condition limited to the beginning of combat. The only "problem" with the assassination feature is the weird...

The 10 Player Races in Volo's Guide Revealed

It might not harm the finnesse users, but it does have an impact on somebody who wants to use heavy armour, or heavy use of spells that require saves or attacks (like most offensive spells). If it's an experiment it should have been in an Unearthed Arcana article, not a published product. You...

The 10 Player Races in Volo's Guide Revealed

If your race has too much, then you pare down the list until it's more manageable. Done. Your race is now both better balanced and not something that penalizes playing against type. And the Orc (which incidentally doesn't have those barbarian features anyway) if it did have the Half Orc...
