This is what I do as well. The only place that gives me any trouble with it is the USPS.

I think another important thing to look at is range. Scorching Ray has a close range (25'+5'/lv) so if you're not within 50' of your target at 5th level, there's nothing doin', whereas with Melf's/Fireball I could toss it at someone around 550' away at 5th level, and MM can hit 150'. Pretty big...

How about being able to use the absolute value of the CHA modifier? That'd take care of those really scary ugly guys. Yeah, its yet ANOTHER can of worms, but I think it'd work.

I'm also quite surprised that this isn't the case. If one used the various items from So&Si, then the varied Perform skills would make some sense, but there's nothing really in straight vanilla D&D that rewards taking more that one perform skill. Maybe they could have come up with different...

I believe that's correct. I don't see why a ranger shouldn't be able to anyway....I suppose its not appropriate for certain Campaign Settings, but for many others its quite valid.

I think some of the changes with 3e made the game more PC Friendly, but not necessarily less deadly. I WILL say that in my home campaigns my players and I often take a slightly adversarial tone, mostly of the "I'm going to outsmart you" variety. I won't use insta-death traps, or ridiculously...
