    D&D 5E (2014) Speculating about the future of the D&D industry/community in a post-5E world

Pathfinder, despite it's success, isn't D&D. D&D simply has a lot more name recognition and brand appeal. Paizo never did a good job at expanding their brand outside of the pen and paper market, but then 'Pathfinder' isn't the most appealing name either. I know when it was announced, the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Second guessing WOTC

So basically they liked the the Pathfinder Basic Game more because it was a more expensive product. Of course, they would like it when someone else is paying the money. That does nothing to decide which one someone will buy when they are browsing Barnes & Noble or Amazon.

If Hasbro bought Paizo, I doubt the staff would have much of a choice.

    D&D 5E (2014) Have you played 5E yet?

I haven't played Basic since I am waiting for the PHB release.

    D&D 5E (2014) Player's Handbook Alpha *Spoilers*

If everything that has been said about the feats in the alpha PHB is true, they don't seem to be much different than they were in the final playtest or even in the final PHB as seen with the Tavern Brawler, just tweaked for balance.

    D&D 5E (2014) PH(B) Tavern Brawler Feat

The rules say if it doesn't resemble a weapon it deals a default 1d4. If it is something like a heavy chair, a DM may rule that it resembles a great club which would be 1d8. If anything the idea that a improvised two-handed weapon always deals 1d6 is a lot less flexible than simply letting a DM...

    D&D 5E (2014) Player's Handbook Alpha *Spoilers*

They said the overall design philosophy was set in stone with the final playtest. Expecting things to drastically change is foolish.

    D&D 5E (2014) A Bard Tease

The bonus in 5e is far more beneficial than it was in 3e. When a player is running around with +35 or more to hit at level 20, that +4 morale bonus is insignificant.

    D&D 5E (2014) A Bard Tease

Kidding about what? Bardic Inspiration is a much higher bonus, casted on a bonus action, and can be used on any ability check, not just attacks and saving throws.

    D&D 5E (2014) Player's Handbook Alpha *Spoilers*

These people complaining are probably the same ones that complained about the final playtests, basically the people who are not really interested in 5e to begin with.

    D&D 5E (2014) A Bard Tease

I don't see the problem. Bless is casted on an action, requires concentration, is only d4 which doesn't go up. Plus it stacks with Bardic Inspiration. Bardic Inspiration is casted on a bonus action, scales anywhere from d6 to d12 and can be used on any ability check, not just attacks and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Player's Handbook Alpha *Spoilers*

They said a number of times that many things the designers intended were changed solely based on the surveys. From the beginning they were upfront that the playtesters would decide what direction D&D Next would take.

So what's wrong with it? We've known about this since one of the Q&A sessions with the development team. An external bonus to pretty much any roll is extremely powerful with the bounded accuracy. In fact, the biggest worry was that it was too powerful.

    D&D 5E (2014) Player's Handbook Alpha *Spoilers*

Decisions were based on balance and opinions of playtesters. That was the point of the polls and why D&D Next playtest went through extreme changes from the beginning to the end.

Have you even playtested D&D Next? The Healer feat and Healer's kit for example has been like this since the playest. Healing via mundane methods has been extremely controversial throughout the playest.

D&D 5E (2014) So it looks as if the mountain dwarf will still make the best overall wizard.

Best by what definition? A high elf that is focusing on Dexterity will have at the same time the dwarf gets heavy armor proficiency, 1 less AC, a 16 Intelligence instead of a 15 and no less cantrips despite having Mage Armor all the time. In additional the high elf will have a higher movement...

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 7/21/14

That was because the other races only got a +1 to two ability scores, so an elf wasn't more dexterous and a dwarf wasn't tougher.
