D&D 5E (2024) New Unearthed Arcana Playtest Includes Barbarian, Druid, and Monk

First, casters have the same problem as martials. If they don't invest in the ability in question, they are going to suck at it, and casters RARELY have the spells they need to overcome an obstacle prepared unless they knew about the obstacle ahead of time. And if they do, they would have use at...

D&D 5E (2024) New Unearthed Arcana Playtest Includes Barbarian, Druid, and Monk

It seems to me that the big reason why this problem exists is not the disparity between ability scores themselves, but what the scores are allowed to be (stat generation.) Many players want their character to be able to recognize immenent danger (Wis), and swing one-handed on a rope to save or...

D&D 5E (2024) New Unearthed Arcana Playtest Includes Barbarian, Druid, and Monk

Every acrobat and dancer who has plenty of strength and endurance has trained to be that strong and enduring. It doesn't mean that their Dex should be used in place those abilities. Want your 18 Dex character to be able to do well at Str-based athletics? Put points into Strength. Or play a...

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8 Druid discussion

Sounds like useful language for template wildshaping. The most effective way to make it balanced and effective over the life of the druid is to make the stats be based on your progressive character stats and level/PB, not the form. shrug

D&D 5E (2024) How to buff healing, make it reliable and discourage whack-a-mole?

So as long as you have 1 level of Barbarian, you can roll d12s for healing? Or do you only have 1 of those d12s, and the rest are d10s from fighter levels? If so, that is super confusing if you're not spending them. Still, don't like either way that shakes out.

D&D 5E (2024) How to buff healing, make it reliable and discourage whack-a-mole?

In my game's narrative, any kind of magical healing, even 1 point, completely heals the major trauma of all wounds and broken ones (though the hurt person may still feel worn down from being low on HP). That way, HD healing from short rests and full HP recovery from long rests now work...

D&D 5E (2024) How to buff healing, make it reliable and discourage whack-a-mole?

I am against HD as healing surges or cure wounds mechanics. Requiring the spending of HD completely nerfs the overall healing for the day. A level 3 fighter only has 3 Hit Dice. They can benefit from only 1-3 healing effects (depending on how many HD those effects allow you to spend), and...

I also provided feedback this round that Template wildshape would be better.

WotC [Updated!] Hasbro Laying Off 1,100 Employees

You seem to believe you have a good read on the internal workings of the D&D team. Calling out italicized, emphasized hate. I'm not aware of a public source of that insight. Are you someone who can represent those feelings for those employees? Otherwise... source?

D&D 5E (2024) How to buff healing, make it reliable and discourage whack-a-mole?

Well, I love playing the healer, but I avoid casting higher level Cure spells if I think I could overheal and lose the excess healing. If I felt encouraged to cast higher level Cure spells, that would lessen the yo-yo effect because I can keep folks topped off if I want.

D&D 5E (2024) How to buff healing, make it reliable and discourage whack-a-mole?

And I can't stand not being able to bring someone back into the fight. It's just an unfun death spiral that makes more spectators than players. I think the current changes will slow down experiencing the yo-yo effect, but HP-healed-over-MaxHP becoming THP would make it even better.

D&D 5E (2024) How to buff healing, make it reliable and discourage whack-a-mole?

I think THP is a valid "other" option to keep your people alive, alongside normal healing... however... I'm starting to wonder whether excess healing should translate to THP. That way healing is rarely wasted. If you already have THP, take the higher value.

D&D 5E (2024) New Unearthed Arcana Playtest Includes Barbarian, Druid, and Monk

I propose that short bows and long bows get renamed to no longer be based on a percieved length, but of strength and power through pull. Rather than a short bow, call it a hunting bow (or a light bow if you like the crossbow naming convention). Rather than a long bow, call it a war bow (or a...

D&D 5E (2024) The Cleric should be retired

To be honest, I don't hate the idea of an Armor of Faith ability as a Divine Order option at level 1. It would fulfill the narrative of many fantasies ("I am protected by the Will of my Goddess!") But I'm not sure about how to portray it compared to the current Protector/Thaumaturge dichotomy.

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8 Druid discussion

Agreed, but the movie is an official expression of the game and can set some expectations to new players who want to be a Wildshape. The language is now represented as part of the lexicon (narrative, not rules), even if it is limited to only in the region of the Sword Coast.

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8 Spell Discussion

So you don't like the new redesign of many Reaction spells that trigger on a failure (Guidance and Resistance)? Because they trigger on a fail, and that failure can be reversed (if you don't think narratively). It sounds like these designs are pretty popular because the player only uses the...

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8 Spell Discussion

Isn't that exactly how the Shield spell works? The attack actually hits you, then you cast a Shield as a reaction, and presto, "oh-no-it-didn't!"

D&D General Why Is D&D Successful?

Best is subjective to taste. But "accessible and best enough for my needs" seems to be very important.

D&D General Why Is D&D Successful?

While I agree that every game and TTRPG provides that escape, I think my second paragraph calls out why I think D&D is successful. It seems to do that better than others. It has greater market share, which draws in more people, but it also keeps them. It must be living up to the hype.

D&D General Why Is D&D Successful?

We Earthly humans are living in an oppressive world that is designed to subdue and depress us, to think we are powerless to change things, or discourage us from fighting for a better world. TTRPGs connect us in ways unlike any other, to team up and do better together. TTRPGs are an escape that...
