D&D 5E (2014) The 2024 Ranger is Actually Pretty Good (with numbers)

Yeah, I agree. A character will almost always have a primary weapon that is better than their secondary weapons, due to primary ability score differences, feat/weapon mastery investment, or magic properties. That does not invalidate the secondary weapons used for their secondary purpose.

D&D 5E (2014) The 2024 Ranger is Actually Pretty Good (with numbers)

Some people want their ally ranger to be long range. Maybe you're one of them. Some people demand their ally clerics/bards/druids be healbots. What does their opinion have to do with what the player of the character wants to play? If they want a long range ace, they can play one.

    D&D 5E (2024) Rogue, Thug. Homebrew subclass

What is the fantasy trying to be fulfilled? A thug? Someone that roughs up other people to intimidate and steal from them, but is still good at being a rogue? (treating all simple melee weapons as finesse weapons opens up clubs and staves and other "thug"-themed weapon options, some sort of...

D&D 5E (2024) No more Cleric and Sorc dips!

I like that the Feats pull some of the weight for "dipping" into other class abilities, like Magic Initiate. Also, at higher levels, the "Enspelled" magic items can help support a specific build that wants access to a specific spell, like "Enspelled Plate Armor of Shield". I allow expanded...

    D&D 5E (2024) Rogue, Thug. Homebrew subclass

I'm not saying that you can't have fun with this homebrew if you make it for yourself or a player who really doesn't mind sucking at Dex-based Rogue abilities, or if you roll ability scores and have both a high Strength and Dexterity score. I'm saying that for public consumption, the design...

    D&D 5E (2024) Rogue, Thug. Homebrew subclass

But they don't have to put points in Strength. They can do all the good stuff with a rapier and light armor.

D&D 5E (2024) No more Cleric and Sorc dips!

For the first time in running D&D 5E, none of my players have a multiclass character by Level 4. That is remarkable because I have 3 players who almost always play multiclass characters. The 2014 Rules made so many 1-level dips too tasty to pass up. Now they are valuing getting those higher...

    D&D 5E (2024) Rogue, Thug. Homebrew subclass

A Rogue subclass does not needs to be compared to full spellcasters or Wish. It needs to be compared to other Rogue subclasses. And it blows all the other Rogue subclasses out of the water for both DPS and survivability.

    D&D 5E (2024) Rogue, Thug. Homebrew subclass

Thinking further, I don't think rogue-style thugs (as opposed to fighter thugs) should have proficiency in shields. This fits no rogue fantasy I'm aware of. They need weapons or free hands to shake people down. Adding shields is merely a mechanical way to significantly increase their defense...

I have those as well. Oh the nostalgia!

    D&D 5E (2024) Rogue, Thug. Homebrew subclass

Even then, it's too powerful compared to other subclasses. Even if given Medium Armor training, it's not worth using, so it is not a limiting factor. It will be ignored in favor of light armor and shield. Rogues are still never going to use Medium armor because Dex is a super ability, and so...

    D&D 5E (2024) Rogue, Thug. Homebrew subclass

Medium armor caps at +2 Dex to AC, so Dex isn't as important past a score of 14. The shield offsets that, and that can be magical to help make for AC discrepancy. But the trick is... we don't care about Medium Armor proficiency. Just keep using the light armor and get the shield so it's just...

Elon Musk Calls for Wizards of the Coast to "Burn in Hell" Over Making of Original D&D Passages

Right!? When I was a kid, I read his books not knowing any better. I look back and I cringe. Multiple series' of inappropriate content. Xanth, Apprentice Adept, Bio of a Space Tyrant...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E economics -The Peasants are revolting!

That's a valid way to play the game in one's own campaign, where there are no truly good gods, just advanced powerful beings that are just as flawed as humans, who are able to dispense wrath on a whim, like the Greek pantheon. But none of that matches with the measurable good and evil that is...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E economics -The Peasants are revolting!

I don't care about how our real-world human society works. I don't want to replicate it. It's horrific. I don't want to go into religious/political rants, but our real world power structures have never been good, or truly representative of good ideals. It's just a mask. The power behind it all...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E economics -The Peasants are revolting!

Good gods and religions with any kind of real influence in a magical fantasy world should really change the quality of life of the commonfolk. Gods are real, man. I'm tired of the trope of good religions not actually being good, and taking advantage of the population. They aren't all...

    D&D General Ideas for a three-hour low-level Thanksgiving adventure?

I've done the Dire Turkey thing, and it was fun! A local wizard creates chimeric amalgamations for holiday feasts. He created a "gobble" of big, hybrid Turkeypigs or Turkeygoats (like griffons and hippogryphs) and while they are flightless, a precocious group of kids accidentally let them out...

    D&D 5E (2024) Group Checks?

Or... It's a superb way to: Inspire more players to choose some non-combat (stealth) options when building their characters, especially if stealth is going to be an important approach option. Encourage a party to use resources to overcome challenges outside of combat, like magic or magic...

D&D 5E (2024) Should full casters and Monks have one weapon mastery?

I love full spellcasters, and I vote no. If a full spellcaster wants to train to master weapons that their subclass does not already give them, they have to make the effort to train. Which means they are not focused on their primary class progression, but something else. Whether a level in...

D&D General A DMG for all of us

Anything that is only 2 pages can be one of several modules in a single DMG. I think the OP wants lots of variant rules for a specific playstyle, but that is still a lot of overlap between styles. Reprinting Magic items 4 times for 4 different campaign styles? Nah, I don't find the value in...
