    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

One could argue "why do only Aberrant Mind Sorcerers get X and not other Sorcerers, or why do only Fighters get Action Surge, because I can imagine other physical classes having that nonmagical ability as well." It's not a good argument for a class-based system. If the suggestion is to change...

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

It sounds like you are saying it is bland and flavorless only because it is not limited? The ability itself is the unique flavor for the class. You just need to find the right words. Relentless Hunter Nothing can shake your primal focus in matters of life and death. When in combat, taking...

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

I do like the suggestion I saw for the Ranger's 13th level Relentless Hunter ability to say: "Taking damage can’t break your Concentration on Ranger spells."

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

See, I'm not on board with only Deadly+ fights. The Heroes need to face foes that they can trounce, and difficult foes that reward the heroes for using tactics.

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

Horwath, being allowed to focus on Ranger Spells, rather than just Hunter's Mark, is an elegant solution that gives a little more power and a lot of flexibility. I may use that if someone really doesn't like Hunter's Mark.

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

It is indeed weak tea. I'd be fine if for the capstone Hunter's Mark could be concentrated on at the same time as a different concentration spell, and the damage was kicked up to 1d12. It would be better balanced than no concentration at all.

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

The Ranger is still strong. Even Treantmonk likes it. He has a recent video calling out all the great non-concentration spells that a Ranger may choose to prepare. Looking at all the individual pieces may not be exciting, but the math adds up to the Ranger being competitive in damage and...

    D&D 5E (2024) How Do I Make a Beast Rider?

If this is a conversion of the character, what level is that character? If a high enough level Ranger, the DM can just houserule offering the 2nd level Find Steed spell as part of the Ranger spell list. Then just pick a different subclass that suits him. Nonmagical combat pets are a terrible...

WotC How much does Hasbro / WotC impact your feelings towards D&D?

Lore is a double-edged sword. It can be very informative, and it can be a straightjacket. I don't need as much lore in the core player's handbook. I need rules, with just enough lore inspiration to give me a vibe. I want more lore in a campaign book. But I don't want a full history book. I...

    D&D 5E (2024) Heroes of the Borderlands

Do you have, and have you read the original KotB? I have it in front of me at this moment. The Keep on the Borderlands itself is literally intended to be used as a home base to develop (and maybe turn into a Bastion later?), and there are multiple adventures worth of content that can be...

    D&D 5E (2024) Heroes of the Borderlands

I would hazard a guess that it's not the same adventure, rather an expanded reimagination, like Curse of Strahd isn't just a reprint of "Castle Ravenloft". It likely focuses on the early, wider adventures of new heroes adventuring in the region in question, which is more than just a Keep on...

D&D 5E (2024) Greatweapon fighting style? Is this another joke? Did everyone at WotC failed elementary school math classes?

I've run the 2024 rules and some players were quite happy to use their Heroic Inspiration to reroll a 1 or 2 on a damage die to get a higher number, and that has happened a couple times already. It is a different kind of feel-good than adding +2 damage to a rolled 1 or 2 on the die. Making it...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Player's Handbook Reviews

I prefer to see the Core Rules as 1 set of rules that are separated into 3 books. They are intended to work together. I think it is appropriate for alternate/variant/modular campaign-affecting options, and the advice that they want to provide to implement them, to live in the DMG rather than...

D&D General Deborah Ann Woll Teaches Jon Bernthal D&D

I am thinking of the Community as group of diverse individuals with a spectrum of interest. For the sake of my point, let's consider the Community as a whole pie of RPG gamers. Whether you measure it via money spent, or games/campaigns played, the D&D slice of the pie is the biggest, though that...

D&D General Deborah Ann Woll Teaches Jon Bernthal D&D

D&D is the 800 lb. gorilla in the room, yes. It is the oldest and most popular RPG IP. They have the money for the advertising and media options. The modern rules are very popular and are easy to onboard new players. But it is the Community that decides that D&D gets that share of the business...

So... it's ok for a person to have a negative reaction to one person's comments... ...and it's not ok to have a negative reaction to another person's comments? Alright. As long as we understand the rules.

    D&D 5E (2024) How D&D Beyond Will Handle Access To 2014 Rules

Individually, we can start homebrewing the spells we want to keep that are being retired. It's pretty simple to do, as we don't even have to edit them to be different as long as it is for your campaigns. They only have to be different if you want to share them with the world. Want to keep 2014...

D&D General Deborah Ann Woll Teaches Jon Bernthal D&D

You're really trying to pin me down in the weeds for a tongue in cheek comment. I gave an updated opinion, clarifying how I felt about 3rd party D&D clones and supplements. Your pushing for more, asking me to go beyond the bounds of my clarification, for... genuine curiosity about my opinion...

D&D General Deborah Ann Woll Teaches Jon Bernthal D&D

I mean to say, in a tongue in cheek kind of way, that 3rd party 5E sourcebooks are D&D. They can have different flavors, sure. Tales of the Valiant and A5E are essentially 5E D&D clones that pretty much use the same core rules engine (with variations, sure). They even capitalize on the...

D&D General Deborah Ann Woll Teaches Jon Bernthal D&D

Shhh... don't tell anyone, but any game made with D&D rules is pretty much a D&D variant/clone, and all D&D is D&D, even if a 3rd party wrote it or if a particular individual isn't fond of its presentation.
