The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey reactions (SPOILERS)

It was a really fun film! Didn't think it was slow, and I'm hoping that there'll be a special edition DVD with another hours worth of Tolkien goodness ... :)

D&D 4E The "4E Crowd" - where will they go? What will they play?

I'm not sure this thread is very encouraging ... Just by a quick skim it seems that dnd is going to be more split than ever ...

D&D 5E (2014) Should D&D Next be having the obvious problems that it's having at this point in the playtest?

Theory 1: it's a sign that 5e is all over the shop, too rushed and too confused Theory 2: it's some clever play testing strategy that will result in a great game Theory 3: it's a marketing strategy to keep people talking on the net i have no idea ... Wait and see

    [Combat] Tuning the Threat Dials

Not 100% sure this addresses the exact thing, but if I want to dial the threat level up without prolonging combat, I just play the monsters (if appropriate) clever and mean. You know, focus fire, using terrain, picking on the right pc, hitting them when they're down, using traps, using action...

Is 13th Age stealing dnd next's thunder?

You can use maps and minis, I too prefer it that way. But measurement is loose and relational, not static and precise fixing pc to grid. Rather, think in terms like: close, far away, behind etc.

Is 13th Age stealing dnd next's thunder?

Light knight, hasn't pelgrane issued a demo? I think it also has links to reviews and stuff, but I might be mistaken. There's another good review with loads of mechanical discussion somewhere on the Internet, but I can't find it at the moment ... Maybe check out the pelgrane forum

What are the archetypal, iconic qualities of a D&D fantasy setting that you love?

Basically middle earth with a few alterations and more monsters and dungeons. Yup.

Is 13th Age stealing dnd next's thunder?

Thanks for the input waderockett - I'm glad 13th Age is doing well, and I wish it the best of luck. I also want dnd next to do well - indeed, from a purely selfish point of view I want it to be the best fantasy rpg ever. For the moment, though, I'll be playing pathfinder and 13th Age...

    Being Left Behind

Caught the end of 3e, then played a little 3.5e, then played quite a bit of 4e ... But though I thought many things about 4e were great, it's got stale now. So it's likely that I'll play some pathfinder and 13th age and then make a decision about whether to take the dnd next plunge ... Given...

Is 13th Age stealing dnd next's thunder?

It's a shame 13th Age isn't more widely known about - it really is a version of dnd IMHO rather than a whole new beast. But then again web chat about it is increasing, and it isn't actually out yet ... :). Whether it supplants dnd, well maybe not - but I do suspect that the dnd market is...

What ideas from 13th Age are people using for dnd?

Cool; I think 13th Age is a great repository of ideas, whether or not people play the game as it or if they lift for their own favoured system. Icons are also quite cool, I'm trying out reflavouring mine using dnd names - Orcus, Tiamat etc i also like making magic items super special :)

Is 13th Age stealing dnd next's thunder?

But with dnd looking, as someone said, sick ... And with Pathfinder, Dungeon World and 13th Age ... Is there a sudden glut of fantasy RPGs? Why, and why now?

Is 13th Age stealing dnd next's thunder?

Is it just me, or is it too co-incidental that the lead designers for both 3e and 4e have had an RPG baby together at round about the same time as dnd next is all over the radar?

What ideas from 13th Age are people using for dnd?

In 13th Age combat there is an escalation die, which is simply an incremental global addition to hit. So starting at turn 2 all PCs get +1 to hit. Then turn 3 another +1 etc. Some abilities also key off this number. This mechanic creates a climactic momentum in combat, and helps stop combat...

What ideas from 13th Age are people using for dnd?

I'm quite impressed by 13th Age at the moment. Is anyone using some of their ideas, like escalation or fail forwards, for their dnd games?
