Monte Cook is writing a fantasy novel

No. I read "Glass Prison", and while I loved the ideas, the voice and the pacing were pretty clumsy. His new book could definitely be worth a read, but it'll be one that I read a bit of in the store first to see if his style has picked up.

Is 3.5e beginning to suffer from rules bloat?

I see it as a possible source of concern, but a necessary one. With a limited supply of crunch and fluff -- the core books -- you've got everyone on the same page. Everyone knows that a Fireball works the same way in my campaign as it does in Merric's, unless Merric has a house rule. Everyone...

    Superhero RPG

This may be well after the fact, but I ran my wife through a warm-up scenario a few days ago in preparation for an upcoming game. The write up (with both in-character and out-of-character notes) is here at my blog: http://pats-quinade.livejournal.com/51878.html Short version: minions are...

    what do you do

I'm a writer at BioWare. I'm currently working on Mass Effect, although I'll be taking off in a few weeks when the next baby arrives. :)

    OotS 464

It got me. I also loved the shock of the second-to-last-panel fade-out. Possibly I had a soft spot for Miko, because I loved the tragedy of it all -- the classic hamartia, the paladin who used Wisdom as a dump stat and forgot why it was she swore all those oaths in the first place. Ah, well.

    Superhero RPG

I'm not speaking from enough experience to say concretely, but I think that it might be less a question of one PL10 easily taking on a bunch of PL5s and more a question of one PL10 easily taking on a bunch of minions. If those PL5s were heroic characters, then the hero wouldn't be able to: -...

    Superhero RPG

I actually think that the scenario you describe is pretty do-able in M&M, but I apologize if I'm reading you out of context. Maybe I'm just a min-maxer, but that's how I'd do it.

How to make a 'ring of friend shield' in MnM?

That's good for avoiding damage. For taking damage for each other, you might go with a triggered Heal with the Empathic flaw. Up the range to Perception, lower the Action to Reaction, and then apply a special "Only for my true love, wherever (s)he is" extra that nets to +0 (+2 for advancing...

    Dire Boars loose in Alabama

As I read it, the kid shot the boar with a pistol while the adults stood by with rifles. If we're getting all D&D-ish with it, I'd argue that the kid shouldn't get full experience. This is pretty clearly a low-level character being escorted through a mid-level encounter by high-level allies.

    Newbie GM needs help

When I wanted to start a d20 Modern game with my D&D crowd, the first game I ran was a sort of rules tutorial for everyone (me included). I had everyone make two 10th-level characters, told them to pick one, and tossed them all into an arena with cover, ladders, bridges, and everything else I...

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip

My feelings are mixed. Like I said, I'll happily watch it, but seeing it after the long hiatus tonight, I was struck by both how much I enjoyed watching Cal try to keep the wheels moving and all the actors segued from character-arc to show-politics seamlessly (which I loved), and Harriet holding...

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip

It's officially canceled. Once the sets have been demolished (and the sets have, in fact, been demolished), you don't come back. I'll happily watch the last few. Shame it didn't catch on with a wider audience.

    Campaign Wiki

Does PBWiki offer access control if you're willing to pay a monthly fee? I'd like to have a personal wiki that's password protected (so that, you know, all my friends' addresses aren't visible), and I'd also like to have a campaign wiki that contained both public information for all the players...

    Enemy-less adventures?

This was instigated by someone (a person under the affects of a hallucinogenic drug, not an actual hostile person) losing control of his vehicle, swerving into oncoming traffic, and having a head-on collision while the PCs were standing on the sidewalk. The bulk of the session was done in...

    Jerry Falwell has died.

Hi, I live in Alberta, and I suspect you'd find some disagreement. :) As always, it's a question of degree, but there are angry people everywhere. Some of them are angry for reasons I agree with. Some of them are angry for reasons I disagree with. Some of them do things in their anger that I...

    Jerry Falwell has died.

I don't know how much one can say about Falwell without it turning into religion or politics. Whenever I listened to his speeches, I was always amazed at how angry he sounded. Regardless of what he was saying, I always felt a lot of hostility, a lot of enjoyment of the fight. I hope that...

Why are hit points generated randomly?

Indeed. But personally, I dislike having one bad die roll penalize my character for the entirety of a campaign. I prefer to have my character be point-buy in all possible ways, and then to have his or her attempts at actions be successful, or not, based on random chance. Personal preference...

Mary Jane Action figure draws ire of women comic fans

And again, conflating prudishness with a disaffection for overt objectification. There's a difference between sexy and sexist.
