D&D General The Generic Deities of D&D

I mean, to you that's the case, but to other people it could be incredibly interesting and provide commentary about what is actually Good and Evil. That a supposed "Arbiter of Good" could fall into the trappings of what is traditionally considered "evil." And keep in mind, that, while the gods...

At that point you could that that Olbould could be a representative of someone rebelling against something unjust. Say for example a genre of fiction being inspired by something problematic, but then people fight back against the problematic things and start using them in non-problematic ways...

Well, 90% of recent things have taken orcs new ways (The Many-Arrows tribe in Forgotten Realms, the basically only line of defense against cosmic horrors in Eberron, there's probably some others that I don't know of in addition to those) so the problem is slowly being solved. There are still...

Yeah, that's a completely different thing than what the mantra was meant to be. It's meant to excuse stuff like what the theme song says. If they're on a space ship, how do they get oxygen, food, water, etc.? The answer to that question being "It's not important to the story, don't worry about...

And thus, they have problems that medieval societies didn't have to deal with, like manticores.

Are Fiends problematic then? Are Undead just a bunch of swipes at people? Yes, Tolkien's orcs are problematic. Y'know what isn't Tolkien's orcs? Oofta's orcs.

I just don't think crapping all over someone for what is ultimately something that is confined to a small group of people (Oofta's game I mean) is the most productive way of doing things. The chance of his game being made into something major is quite low, so ultimately these shots in the...

I think that's because basically whenever Orcs are mentioned, even with them in a positive light, people come in and say "Y'know orcs were originally based on old racial stereotypes right?" and when someone says that they aren't using them in that light and they are just another fantasy race in...

Inccubi exist so that overprotective parents can excuse the habits of their daughters and be able to essentially sell them for better dowries. And the Orcs-as-primitive-savages hasn't? I've seen plenty of worlds where Orcs are perfectly normal. (as much as a fantasy race can be when you don't...

Mmm... No. Succubi are the incarnation of the All Women are Lustful trope, which is pretty damn misogynistic, while Harpies were incarnations of evil winds meant to spread misery and suffering. Again: Mmm... No. The OG Vampire in fiction, Dracula, was basically a personification of "these...

It has it's places (fiends, abberrations, undead) but applied to humanoids it's generally bad. Although I do wonder how you feel about creatures that are inherently good, because sometimes good essentially means "no fun allowed" and sometimes to do serious good you need to do something...

The thing I've gotten from him is that, in his world, Orcs are basically a race of Boogeymen, he's just using the term Orc because why not. (sidenote, @Oofta if you are doing that, Bugbears IMO work better, but you do what you do) Aside from sharing a name, they aren't related at all. Now, if...

If you listen to Socretes, then yeah, stupid does equal to evil, in a way.

To that, I say, "Don't assume malice when ignorance is also possible". Specifically passive ignorance. But they are for his world, are they not? Just because they are in other cases doesn't mean that they are in all cases.

D&D 5E (2014) (+)What Ubiquitous DnD Tropes Get It Totally Wrong?

For a lot of creatures, them being evil comes from the fact that Evil is a cosmic force in D&D, and creatures can be either made of (fiends) or powered by (undead) said force. Others could have such an alien mind/physiology that they are evil to basically everything except them (abberations)...

But also, just because that happened in the past doesn't mean that's what is happening here. His orcs could be based on no human culture (unless you count jerks as a culture) or a culture that he made up.

That's fine too, just remember that other people might fight something off about it. Same with me probably. I just find people/things that choose to be evil, than things that are evil in their nature, although things that are literally made of Evil (fiends and such) to also be interesting.
