The problem being that "being weak physically" actually matters for only about 5 or so levels, at most. Hell, in 3.5e, the wizards being weak physically stopped mattering around when they learned Color Spray. A 1st level spell.

This is 1e ya'll are talking about. It's entirely possible they got TPK'd by some slime before they got to that level.
