E:Tools and PCGen will both do templates. I'm not sure about the other character generators or Excel sheets that are out there.
"Import other monsters" - not sure what you're going for there. E:Tools does have datasets available from other sources for purchase.
If you only want a "notepad" type program, I've heard a lot of people using MyInfo.
But if you're going to have a laptop at the table, you should really consider combat management.
It's been discussed several times recently. Do a search on this forum. I preferred klooge and did a comparison.
Fantasy Grounds got rid of those tokens and can now actually do minatures? Screenshots on the website still show tokens which was one of the major shortfalls of FG.
WOW! That is one incredible map.
I find Dunjinni worth it as well. It's not too hard to slap together a map to use for your game. And, as pointed out, the user forum over there is full of great maps ready to use as well and you don't even need Dunjinni to use those.
You have several choices in combat managers: My program, DM's Familiar, DM Genie, Roleplaying Master, Crystal Ball (for the mac), and the GMGen portion of PCGen. Several threads in here talking about each of the programs and they all have free demos where you can download the program and test...
Fantasy Grounds has got a pretty face but there's not much brains behind that smile. I prefer kloodge.
Take the battle map: With FG, you placed a letter ball on the map to mark characters and monsters. With Kloodge, you have icons with pictures. In FG, the map knows nothing about distance. You...
For Kloodge.werks, you need to open ports 4466 and 4467 to host. I'm having some trouble doing that.
Internet connection comes in through my Linksys router. I've setup port forwarding on the router for 4466-4467. Checking ShieldsUp, it reports that 4466 is indeed open but that 4467 remains...
My very old scanner has very old software that came with it. Is there such a thing as "generic" scanner software that will work with any old scanner?
The main problem with the software is that it will only let you select a rectangular portion of what you scanned. So if you can a monster, block...
Whaaa?
You've kind of lumped together stuff that doesn't necessarily go together. My advice would go like this:
Are you going to have a computer at the gaming table? If yes, a program to manage combat is going to give you the most benefit. Programs in that category are: DM's Familiar, DMG...

The best thing to do in my mind is to test out both programs and see which one makes sense for the way you want to game and the way you want to use a computer at the gaming table. The two programs have different philosophies on how they...
Ventrilo
I've played very briefly with Ventrilo. It does what you want, kind of. With it you setup "rooms". So you'd have one room where the group is. If you wanted to chat privately with someone, both of you would doube-click on a different room. The program shows you who is in each room. So...
How come you don't have a free demo so people can see what the software does?
What do you offer, other than the pro-DMs, that I don't get with other virtual gaming software - kloodge.werks, openrpg, screenmonkey, FantasyGrounds, etc.?
I think that's right, IF you bring your own DM to run the game or you find a volunteer there. Looks like the are also going to have "pro-DMs" that are going to run games. You pay an additional amount to play in those - $6-$8 for a 3-4 hours session.
Anybody know anything about GhostOrb? With a full page ad in the last two Dragons, it would seem they have grand plans. But I don't see any demo software on the website and only 1 screenshot.
DM's Familiar does all of that. It's commercial though, $29.95.
the ability to save the adventuring party and reload the party: DMF has a combat board that is persistent. So each time you start the program, the PCs would be loaded up. You can even quit the game in the middle of a combat and...

Ideally, I want a PDF sheet that does minimal calculation allowing me to type in most of the information and save/print. Mad Irishman's would be perfect example except they require a full copy of Acrobat. Is there a PDF character sheet that will do that with Reader?
I thought that was...
Kloodge.werks, ScreenMonkey, OpenRPG, and FantasyGrounds are programs that help you play "traditional d&d" over the computer. You can look into those and see which program you like or try to find a game that way. I like kloodge myself.
