I allow my players to use the BoEMII variant sorcerer with a free Eschew Materials feat and Thematic Spell feat, but they don't get a familar until 2nd level. Seems to work so far,doesn't seem to be overpowering the wizard in the group.

My only real problem with 3e art would have to be more of a style problem. Overly skinny characters (Mialee ?!?), the crappy sketch style in the PHB, things like that just drive me nuts. But, I may be just stuck in the past with my favorite drawings by Easley/Caldwell and the like.

No, you can't do both because they do the same thing (use an ability score in place of Strength) just with different abilities. It would have to be one or the other, not both.

I like big wizard's guilds myself, so I would use the first map as the above ground tower and place the second map under it as the real guild halls (upper floors are rooms and offices, lowest floor is the labs and studies and libraries. YMMV

A character who selects the Leadership feat gets a cohort and followers. Followers generally should stay behind while the cohort comes with the party. (That's the way I handle it for the bard in the group I DM for.) YMMV.
