    D&D 4E Non-Euclidean Geometry in 4E?

I like that, at the least it looks cool, but does it really address the long diagonal movement problem? I still seems as though measured bits of string on top of any sort of grid so you can determine flanking and spacing is the only way to avoid special cases. Aside, of course, from the fact...

    D&D 4E Non-Euclidean Geometry in 4E?

I say up with Non-Euclidean Geometry. Let ease of counting triumph of space and time. Further, I would argue that any person who knows that diagonals are 'longer' than straight lines also understands that dealing with that issue is a pain.

The Possibility of "Too Fantastic" Fantasy

Oh, no doubt it's a question of degrees and spin more than anything else. I just think culture in books being more familiar vs culture in news being less is one tendency among many. And on that note, it's perfectly possible that the cultures of different species would feel more or less alien...

    And the East(s) really.

WotC_Rodney on Ari M. and Al Qadim

I think Apollo shows up more as an influence in Iconography rather than as an actual character. There is, however, an 11th century Southern Italian Saint Guattama who is pretty clearly - even explicitly - the Buddha. Yeah, Gregory the Great has a fantastic letter to St. Augustine - the...

The Possibility of "Too Fantastic" Fantasy

I don't know, I think that fictional cultures are nearly always going to be more familiar than disparate actual modern cultures. Writing unreality is difficult on the one hand. On the other, you, as the audience, pretty much know you know everything there is to know about the fictional culture...

What classes will be in the martial power book?

The most basic power of the controller is the ability to affect a lot of enemies at once. On that note I think the closest you could come to a martial controller would be a Sapper/Grenadier style character ala Malazan. Maybe some sort of pack master, but that almost sounds weird as a Martial...

    Races of YOUR World

Well, I think there are story concepts coming out of Meso-American and the Pre-Columbian meliaux that are salvageable or even really really attractive. But I agree that Maztica was very much not it. I don't even know that pure analogue settings work well. The best method, for my money, is to...

The Possibility of "Too Fantastic" Fantasy

Oh, I gotcha I don't know why I didn't immediately assume you were referring to the rules sets. Yeah, I think the culture issue is a tricky one. On the one hand, you absolutely need familiarity. On the other, too much familiarity breaks verisimilitude. A guy who lives for 2,000 years in...

D&D 4E What will your first 4E campaign look like?

If you're interested I think I have it pretty well written up in short format. I had been thinking about getting some commentary for it in a thread here on the boards, but I don't know that the 4E conversion is ready for prime time. I really like my Eladrin, though, I went with a Haunted Mesa...

Core Rulebook Gift Set Discounted on Amazon!

Yeah that sounds about right - Boxed set from Amazon, PHB from FLS, and H1 from whoever gets it first. So probably FLS.

WotC_Rodney on Ari M. and Al Qadim

Yeah, Ruleslawyer is spot on. The Dar was pretty tolerant of different religions - though you could always occasionally be in trouble just as a scapegoat or if you were way too idolatrous or unfamiliar which Al-Quadim also reflected - and very very tolerant of other races. A lot less tolerant...

D&D 4E What will your first 4E campaign look like?

I'm torn. On the one hand I really want to do a 4E campaign set in a fantasy analogue of the Medieval Southwestern United States - Giants run Chaco Canyon as a vast pilgrim empire where to dance in the ceremonies is to preserve the land at the cost of your own life, Eladrin cliff palaces fade...

WotC_Rodney on Ari M. and Al Qadim

Despite it's artificiality I liked it. A huge part of the Medieval Arabian scene, at least for me, is that it's a tolerant conquering empire. Greeks, Armenians, Jews, Turks, Iranians, Kurds, and Arabs all living in the same cities and basically accepting the same laws is something I can't not...

I went with Magical Medieval, but I now feel sad I didn't vote for Ptolus.

It's not the unit of measurement that matters, it's the magnificence.

    Races of YOUR World

Seems like we have a couple of people working on Pre-Columbian or Point of Contact fantasy settings. For all the Maztica hate it seems like there are some miles to go wtih the concept.

    Unified Progression - why level/2?

That could be a problem with the characters as written. Harried writers desperately trying to crunch all the class numbers are notoriously disadvantaged vs. ambitious PCs carefully checking all of the angles.

Why is H1 coming out a month before the PHB?

I'll absolutely be buying the adventure. I think it's better for a group to see an integrated package before they move on to the complete rules.
