D&D 4E can i use essentials with my 4e group?

While their options are limited, I do like the use of stances all around. They provide a lit of tactical options for people looking to do some cool things with OAs for example.

if by technically, you mean completely, then yes.

No conversions needed. Just make sure if you are a player that the DM allows it.

    D&D 5E (2014) I just don't buy the reasoning behind "damage on a miss".

I'm just saying, fighting style to give damage on a miss with no resource expenditure is bad. But a wizard gets practically the same thing albeit 5 levels later, but no one seems to care?

lets also talk about potent cantrip, at level 5 a wizard can have at will damage on a miss without expending any resources.

well that's 1 level for every 10 feet of range you get :P

Should we also remove potent cantrip from the evocation wizard? Same deal, at will on a miss damage without any kind of save.

I assume you are going for the iceberg meaning things 4e did? Because second wind doesn't have anything to do with GWF.

I am all for changing GWF to have some limits, I am against though removing damage on a miss outright because of some kind of weird definition fight over what hit and miss mean. I have already put forth several alternatives, my favorite being giving the target a choice of a penalty or action or...

    D&D 5E (2014) "Damage on a miss" poll.

Ah, so your issue is with meta gaming, not with this ability. I don't know, seems like any observation of the GWF in action should tell the wizard in game that it's not going to help.

I didn't miss the point, I just think the wizard would be wrong. Is there anything with that? He may think that this powerful spell can protect him, but nope! It doesn't.

I figure it's right about when the large weapon is being swung in your direction is when you know that you need to either get out of the way (or whatever penalty is required) or take damage. I don't see this as metagaming, I'll bet if you encountered someone with anything called a Great Weapon...

Pathfinder 1E Current Pathfinder Players: Are you considering switching over to D&D 5E?

I also have demands on my time. But I guess the main difference is my games are not lengthy campaigns. Well I have done one or two, but now a days I just run Adventures, with that we can play many more games.

    D&D 5E (2014) "Damage on a miss" poll.

With all of that said, I am all for modifying GWF. I could see having GWF being a stance that needs to be activated, or a variable damage like you do str mod damage on a miss minus what you missed by. So if your mod is 5, if you miss by 4 you still do 1 damage. Actually what I like the best...

Part of that HP loss can be from the training of always giving your opponent a catch 22, take the weapon or scramble out of the way. (incurring loss from dodging)

Pathfinder 1E Current Pathfinder Players: Are you considering switching over to D&D 5E?

True, I can see that as a factor. But the default assumption that one needs to have one game bothers me. It's... Between seasons. We have had flurries, warm afternoons and ever thing in between. Can't wait for the snow though!

    D&D 5E (2014) "Damage on a miss" poll.

So, you are saying that a caveat of no damage at all on a miss would suffice? The reason why this particular training allows such a thing is because this would be the simplest way to represent such a fighter. No messing with secondary attacks, no comparing to some kind of touch AC or having to...

Pathfinder 1E Current Pathfinder Players: Are you considering switching over to D&D 5E?

I don't get the mentality that one has to "switch" to another game. Why can't people play more than one game?

    D&D 5E (2014) "Damage on a miss" poll.

Well, let me ask you a question then. Feats like Cleave and Power Attack, why do they exist. It seems like anything anyone could just do. Do I need to really take a feat to put sacrifice accuracy for power? Do I really need a feat to keep my swing going through an enemy? These things are...
