Eh, this is all just a semantic debate. Some seem to think it means that martial is magic, others think it means that martial is capable of super effects without magic. Personally, I think it's more of both. It's open enough to be mundane extraordinary skill or some kind of battle magic.

if we were talking about 3rd edition or PF we'd just slap an (ex) on it an no one would be complaining. Extraordinary Abilities (Ex)Extraordinary abilities are nonmagical, though they may break the laws of physics. They are not something that just anyone can do or even learn to do without...

If, a player wants to say he is using some kind of battle magic then sure. If not, then there are ways to explain mundane versions of the event.

I guess to answer your question, it's up to the player. The martial power source is open enough for a player to have some kind of ki, or just brute strength or inhuman reflexes, or some kind of battle magic. Since fluff is mutable in 4e, it's up to the player what kind of martial ability his...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rS5tzGfOBGU MAGIC! But seriously, do you imagine the player using this power just says. "I just stand there and I'm invisible, not even trying to hide."? If so, then I imagine your confusion. Personally if this power was used I'd either ask the player why he is...

With keywords. As noted already, the martial powe rsource is almost devoid of most magical keywords. It's usually untyped damage, no fancy effects like teleportation, and most of it's major effects rely on having a weapon or enough weapons or ammunition to make the attack successful.

Well, the requirement is that you must be hidden already. So it means that you hide really well. Note this just makes you visibly hidden, per the invisibility rules you can be found from making too much noise and other senses could still find you like tremorsense, truevision or other...

Really? this is your nit-pick now? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZesjnWTY8w Guinness World Records: The Great Throwdini - Knife Thrower. Dr. David R Adamovich (USA, aka The Great Throwdini) broke his Guinness World Record by hurling 102 throwing knives, each 14 in (36 cm) long, around his...

Thank you, now do you have any more magical martial powers I can try to explain? I'll grant that there may be some that are in the real of supernatural or extraordinary, but I don't fully buy the "it's magic!" bit.

"Requirement: wielding crossbow, light thrown weapon, or sling" Nothing about how many, just what types of weapons it works with. as it is a close attack, it needs one piece of ammunition or weapon per attack roll.

Well for one, you'll need at least one piece of ammunition per attack roll. Close Attack (PHB 271): "If you’re using a projectile weapon to make a close attack, you need one piece of ammunition for each target, and if you’re using thrown weapons, you need one for each target." So that is...

I think what the problem is that you (Imaro) are stating that all martial ability in 4e is magic. I was willing to buy that it's connected with magic sometimes. Being supernaturally quick to avoid a blow, or other examples like that. But you are saying that all martial ability is magic. And...

I see what you mean, in the context of the 4e world martial is just another kid of magic, it's not bad, just how the world works. I can get behind that.

What would you call mundane actions that potentially break the laws of physics? I'd call it non-traditional magic.

I'm still not seeing the issue. it's no different than the EX abilities of 3rd edition and Pathfinder. 3rd srd "Extraordinary abilities are nonmagical, though they may break the laws of physics. They are not something that just anyone can do or even learn to do without extensive training." PF...

And to that I'd say, that high level martials have always been magical. The level 8-9 name level for the fighter was Superhero after all.
