The Holy Grail of Online Tools (Listen up, WotC!)

So what kind of guidance would you be looking for? I could see a program that comes with several templates like several variations on the 5 room dungeon. But other than that, I can't seem to think of anything else that something like masterplan could do to provide guidance.

    List of core mechanics

Savage worlds: Roll skill or attribute (d4-d12) against a base target number of 4. Add modifiers to target number, or in special circumstances other values may be target number (like parry for example). If character is a wildcard roll an additional d6, take the higher of the two dice. If a...

    In one sentence...

I also want standoff rules, too often it doesn't matter if you are unarmed, you stand a good chance if you just rush a gunman.

Tell me what you love about rules heavy games

My preference in games lately has gone towards the simple, I started in 4e, transitioned to Savage Worlds and finally Numenera has been calling my name. Even though my preference has been going down the progression, I have found that I keep looking back up the ladder for satisfaction. I just...

    D&D 4.5E (Not Essentials)

Unless the DM essentials book was vastly different than the rules compendium (I never looked at that one), don't take this the wrong way but it would seem that you may have never actually read the books, just parroted what everyone else says about it. RC p126 The skill entries in this chapter...

D&D 5E (2014) Why the claim of combat and class balance between the classes is mainly a forum issue. (In my opinion)

Lets also take a look at 4e PHB p23: Evil and Chaotic Evil Deities Your character can worship an evil or a chaotic evil deity without being of the same alignment, but that’s walking a fine line. The commandments of these deities exhort their followers to pursue evil ends or commit destructive...

D&D 5E (2014) Why the claim of combat and class balance between the classes is mainly a forum issue. (In my opinion)

I'll give you that 4e did restrict it, but 3e did little to encourage it. Its language actually seems to subtly discourage evil PCs. But here is another question, besides necromancy (which has issues besides evilness), what evil options were missing for players?

D&D 5E (2014) Why the claim of combat and class balance between the classes is mainly a forum issue. (In my opinion)

As for the starting level. That might have been a 3e thing, doing a quick google search for name level from AD&D, the 1st level of fighter is called "Veteran," doesn't sound like someone just out of training does it? Can't seem to think that 4e suddenly broke the mold with that one right? As...

Thanks for the help with the older editions, I don't have any of those to reference.

D&D 5E (2014) Why the claim of combat and class balance between the classes is mainly a forum issue. (In my opinion)

I don't dispute that the player characters are assumed to be heroes in 4e, I am disputing that this is something different from what came before, namely 3e. For the whole level 1 HP thing, take a look at the level 1 monsters, they easily have 2-3x the HP of the players! a goblin might have...

D&D 5E (2014) Why the claim of combat and class balance between the classes is mainly a forum issue. (In my opinion)

I'd like to call shenanigans on this. At least as far as 3.5 is concerned. 3.5 PHB p4 You character is an adventurer, a hero who sets out on epic quests for fortune and glory. Other characters join your adventuring party to explore dungeons and battle monsters such as the terrible dragon or...

Rules heavy = bad; light = good

I prefer a lite ruleset with heavy a heavy emphasis on customization. Such as savage worlds. The rules are simple and each individual rule is simple enough. But the depth comes in the level of customization. You can create a sword swinging fighter or delve into powers and edges that give...

    D&D 4.5E (Not Essentials)

If 4.5 is going to be a revision along the lines of 3.5. I would say that essentials would have been awesome to continue with. I personally do not get the hate for ir. But if we are doing drastic revisions I would go for something like savage world's with hit points. Generic abilities that...

    My Adventure Design Philosophy

I think you just need the right kind of flow chart. they can prove useful for event chains as well. having an outline of how events will progress if PCs do not interfere I think would be great for a sandbox.

    D&D 4E Reply if you love 4e

After I finished a 4 year on and off again 4e campaign I was burnt out on the system. I jumped over to savage worlds, and am still having a great time, and looking foreward to running a numenera game. Though I never really thought much about 4e, most games in my area are pathfinder society and...

Why simpler - much simpler - is better

So true. While I have not a huge variety of games I have noticed my trend in gamelove is towards the simpler, I started in D&D 3rd, Then 4th was my favorite, then Savage worlds tickled my fancy and finally I am drooling over numenera. Though each still holds a special place for me. 4e still...
