D&D 5E (2024) DMG 2024: Is The Sandbox Campaign Dead?

Got it, guess we just have different needs to run a sandbox, those things you mention are all things I do on my own. So from my perspective, sandbox play is alive and well in '24 (as it was in 14). The Dungeon Dudes Drakenheim setting for 5e sounds exactly like what you are looking for.

D&D 5E (2024) DMG 2024: Is The Sandbox Campaign Dead?

I mean, it's everything I need to run a sandbox. For me, a sandbox is a map with some thought starters, and then the campaign is created by responding to what the players do, who they get involved with, and what 'big things' are happening in the world regardless of if they engage with those or...

D&D 5E (2024) DMG 2024: Is The Sandbox Campaign Dead?

I ran a 2 year, 20 level sandbox using EGTW. I think campaign guides in general through the 5e lifespan are good rules support for sandbox style play, where the PCs pick a direction and go, choosing to engage or not with a variety of challenges the world presents. The Greyhawk setting in the...

D&D 5E (2024) The Dragons Video for the 2025 Monster Manual

Absolutely gorgeous art throughout. The Dragon Turtle piece is amazing, and I love that they've specified that Gargantuan creatures now have no upper limit on how big they are. Think they made a really good design decision to incorporate the traditional Lair Action abilities into Legendary...

    D&D General Alignments in a sentence/phrase/whatever

Agreed, and with "The needs of the One outweigh the needs of the Many" as CG. Otherwise brilliant set of quotes!

D&D General 5 types of DM styles

I def go for an 80's action movie style for my DMing. That said, PCs can die if the dice dictate it or they make stupid decisions. Just last week though, my 4th level PCs playing in Infinite Staircase, ignored the warnings that the under layer of the Ziggurat was too much for them and pressed...

D&D General Should the DM roll in the open?

Chose yes because I roll in the open when I DM and prefer that way for games I'm a PC in. That said, it doesn't bother me if a DM chooses to roll behind the screen, I just assume that some rolls will be fudged if that's the case.

D&D 5E (2024) WotC should have stuck to it's guns with the 2024 Beyond Update

@pukunui thank you for that breakdown! That will def help, though I still want the ability to do that by campaign as well. I'll admit I may have gone a bit overboard with my rant (and that the original WotC solution would be bad for some players). It was definitely after September that they...

D&D 5E (2024) WotC should have stuck to it's guns with the 2024 Beyond Update

Hopefully we'll get to that point in the near future. Really just needed to get it off my chest, but if I had to pick, the new in-map encounter system is so great that I'll deal with the messy 14/24 interface for a while.

D&D 5E (2024) WotC should have stuck to it's guns with the 2024 Beyond Update

Rant/ Had an otherwise fantastic session last night that was marred by WotC's caving to a small but loud segment of the fanbase who pushed back on the original plan for DDB as the 24 rules came online (and I have a feeling that a majority of those voices don't even use DDB anyhow). I'm a HEAVY...

D&D General A Quick Peek At Tiamat In Amazon's 'Secret Level' Anthology TV Show

Pretty sure the 'flamethrower' was a wall of fire. What about the polymorph broke immersion? Because they chose a snail?

D&D General A Quick Peek At Tiamat In Amazon's 'Secret Level' Anthology TV Show

I was thinking Open Hand for the Monk as he knocked an enemy back off the bridge on a hit, but I'm not positive. As for those talking about how dark it was, I thought the same thing when I watched on my laptop, but later I showed my wife on our TV (put it in Filmmaker Mode) and it popped.

Such a great short! Loved the Monk and the Druid. Hope we get a sequel!

D&D General Changing subclasses mid-campaign (or even classes)

Yep. Whether the change makes sense for story reasons or just because the player isn't happy with the class/sublcass, I'll work with them to make the change. Like to have a story reason, but alsom more than willing to chalk it up to Magic or The Gods. Only had this happen once, a death Cleric...

    Spoilers Rebel Moon-my spoiler review

Just got Netflix after a 2 year break from it and decided to check out Rebel Moon. Watched the director's cut of part 1 and 2 over a couple days, and by the end of Part 2, I was looking forward to a Part 3. While derivative of Star Wars (itself derivative of The Hidden Fortress and Dune)...

Hasbro Confirms New Unannounced Dungeons & Dragons Video Game in Development

Does WotC own the engine that BG3 was made with? If so, they could use that to quickly do an Icewind Dale or a Planescape sequel, maybe both! Point being that would give them some lower stakes IP to work with before trying to tackle BG4 internally. The combat engine in BG3 is so great it...

    D&D 5E (2024) What's Your Experience Like with '24?

Running Infinite Staircase with a mix of 14/24 PCs and using the 24 rules plus my usual house rules. 4 sessions in and all is running smoothly. 24 Ranger, Paladin and Barbarian are very happy with the revised classes so far (currently at level 3) and love the weapon masteries.
