    D&D 5E (2014) My D&D Next Experience at DDXP

Over the weekend, most of my gaming group and I traveled to Ft. Wayne to participate in the play test for D&D Next. Though I cannot reveal anything specific about the mechanics, I will attempt to relay our experience and impressions of the new game. First a bit of background. Our group...

    Need more bad DMs?

I played the play test with Monte Cook was my DM. Sadly, my group and I did not like the game play much. I had fun because Monte is an excellent DM, but that had nothing to do with the system. I think in the hands of the average DM it would be really bad. It is my hope that the game play...

After DDXP, how are you feeling about D&En?

My group and I made the trip to DDXP for the play test. We were all pretty excited to see what was in the works. We were even more excited when our DM was Monte Cook. Sadly, even with an awesome DM, when we left the enthusiasm for D&D Next had bottomed out. While there were a few things...

    Let's Forget the Forgotten Realms

I couldn't agree more about the Forgettable Realms. I'm an Eberron man myself, but for 5E to live up to the lofty goal of supporting all play styles, I think there should be NO default setting. Don't build in the preconceived notions of a setting, that then need to get altered if someone wants...

How do you feel about the future of D&D after the official announcements?

I picked neutral. I love 4E, and I am hopeful the new edition can support that style of play... but I am pretty doubtful that it can be all things to all people.

    D&D New Version

Holy cow! A company interested in... profit? Perhaps even putting profit above the good of its customers? Does the president know about this? Has someone alerted the media? Thank heavens Wall Street, the fast food industry, and big tobacco still have our backs!

WotC Seeks Unity with a New Edition

Based on many of the comments in this thread alone, I'd say WotC has a serious uphill battle in any attempt to unify the fan base. A lot of folks are very invested in their chose edition/company. I'll be interested to see how the play test shakes out, but with any group this divided compromise...

    D&D 4E Reply if you love 4e

I love 4E... I love it more than I could ever love a human child. (But then again, I'm not a kid person).

    Essentials: why the hate?

The paladin wields a fullblade. I can't recall the power names, but both dailies are 4[W] powers, and one encounter is 3[W] while the other is 1[W] in close burst 1. I don't know the rogue's powers, I just have stats from a couple of sessions where we tracked everyone's damage output for...

    Essentials: why the hate?

As I said, I was speaking from personal experience. I'm sure others' experiences have been different. It bears pointing out that the characters that this players compares himself to are very optimized, and there are considerably fewer optimization options for the executioner than a rogue or...

    Essentials: why the hate?

Speaking from personal experience, my initial reaction to the Essentials Martial classes was very negative. I felt the loss of power options and reliance on MBA cut into my favorite thing about 4E. To test them out, I built a couple, but I was utterly unimpressed with them. Some time...

Tools of Two Trades (Weapliment Expertise) Article Up

It's for the ladies.... "Hey baby, did you see how well I handled my staff just now?"

Ever use your place of work as a model for adventure?

Real life is the best place to draw inspiration fro gaming. I've used the actual locations a couple times (in modern or post apocalyptic games)... a mall the group had to infiltrate to rescue some hostages, and the ruins of a shipping hub. I have based various towns on my hometown, and have...

Campaign Maps now on sale from Gale Force Nine

I can't say definitively about the FR map, but I picked up the Eberron map at Gen Con. It is the exact same map from the 4E campaign setting book, only a fair bit larger. It has the same level of detail, which is pretty good (has all the cities, towns, and villages, roads, major ruins...

    Dragons in Eberron

Keep in mind you are dealing with a wyrmling, it's entirely possible this young dragon knows nothing about the draconic prophecy or its homeland. Consider the creature's back story... how did it come to be in Knorvaire and not Argonesson? Was it born here? Who were its parents? Perhaps the...

    Bring back alignments?

I miss having all nine alignments, and hope they return in the next edition.

5e Is Like the Girlfriend You Broke Up With Last Year

Not a bad analogy, but technically you broke up with her after she made some changes. She wanted to try new things with you, but you couldn't or wouldn't accept the change. Admittedly, when this happens in real life, with a real girl, you often remember it as her breaking up with you. To...

New Legends and Lore: The Rules

It sounds to me like Mearls is trying to build a game that is all things to all gamers, which is not realistic. I do think that having varying levels of complexity in the same game is possible, but this seems too modular. While an established gaming group wouldn't have too much trouble...

    Bladesinger Preview!

I could be wrong, but it doesn't seem to me like the modest at-will powers will cover the power gap of having encounters as daily powers. I have yet to see one of these new essentials style subclasses that I actually like as well as one of the classic characters.

AMpersand #400 Bill S leaving WotC (and others?)

I hate to see anyone lose their job, especially these days, but I have to agree. I have not cared for the direction D&D has taken during his tenure (but I still prefer it to Pathfinder). I am certain many of these choices have originated from the higher-ups, part of a leader's job is to push...
