D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

I personally find Monte the apostate Cook who ruined initiative.

D&D General Why ya gotta be so Basic? Understanding the Resurgence of Moldvay's Basic

I had a longer and more passionate talk about roll under on another reply on the topic of 2E in general. Needless to say, I’m not a fan of single mechanic games and do like me some roll under mechanics.

D&D General Why ya gotta be so Basic? Understanding the Resurgence of Moldvay's Basic

From my research on this ability check codification, it’s seems like the first time it was really fully explored was in the Johnathan Tweet chapter in 2E DMGR5 Creative Campaigning splat. It’s a somewhat interesting concept in that it seemed to be effectively killed off with the D20 system and...

D&D General Why ya gotta be so Basic? Understanding the Resurgence of Moldvay's Basic

I think we’ve been arguing separate points and are both representing our views correctly. I also think I may have misunderstood what yours was. My mistake. I agree with your statement then that Moldvay was not creating rules, but providing ideas for DMs to adjudicate success and failure...

Not going to say you’re not smart, but those few games likely set you up to understand the 1E stuff better than you ever could have without it. I’m similar as I played in a handful of RC games and then got the 2E books and started DMing. Looking back, it’s shocking how much of that game was...

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

My thought has always been that the various cure XXX wounds spells should have just used the monster summoning nomenclature, i.e. cure wounds I thru VII with a number of d8s equal to the spell level. If you want to boost the healing, let it’s get a some additive value, say +1/3lvls of caster per...

    D&D General 50 years, 50 publications - results

Seems like there is some serious nostalgia and likely demographic bias in these results. The 1E core books are iconic, but they are borderline impossible to use solely by themselves and without lots of years of context or prior knowledge of OD&D and or B/X which was the case for a lot of...

D&D General Why ya gotta be so Basic? Understanding the Resurgence of Moldvay's Basic

The glossary is just to be a reference to what the term means. Its utility is described in the proficiency chapter for campaigns that chose to not include skills whatsoever and as a way to adjudicate the more nebulous Secondary Skills.

D&D General Why ya gotta be so Basic? Understanding the Resurgence of Moldvay's Basic

I don’t see any particular difference between what Zeb wrote in the 2E PHB and Moldvay’s work. Especially since it’s in the part where Zeb is describing how to deal with things without fixed rules.

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

The Hobbit has the main characters mostly either fleeing from, hiding from, or generally avoiding encounters where they weren’t surprised. In the cases where they were surprised, they are poisoned, surrounded by overwhelming odds (to have to be rescued by DMPC Gandalf), or captured and stripped...

AD&D 2E Did The Complete Fighter's Handbook kill "Zero to Hero"?

I thought the addition of expertise in PO:C&T for non-single class fighters was sufficient. As for rangers, I simply let them choose at creation to take the ambidextrous ability or bow specialization. I never had one that didn’t take the latter option among players who had played the RAW one...

D&D General Why ya gotta be so Basic? Understanding the Resurgence of Moldvay's Basic

This whole discussion did get me curious, as I thought I remember ability checks being core in 2E. Sure enough, it’s right there in the glossary at the very beginning of the PHB. The only reference to it, other than the one I initially mentioned about “Ability Checks as Saving Throws” is the...

D&D 5E (2024) WotC Invites You To Explore the World of Greyhawk

Has anyone actually had a player who wanted to play a Dragonborn? I’m not joking, as I’ve never seen one in a game since I started 5E in 2017.

D&D 5E (2024) Experienced DMs, how useful is the 2024 DMG to you?

If it’s got a functional method to rapidly create NPCs it would honestly be worth it. The most frustrating part of 5E to me, especially as an old school DM where NPCs were just built similarly to PCs, is how that methodology simply doesn’t work in 5E. I’ve basically resorted to just buying a...

AD&D 2E Did The Complete Fighter's Handbook kill "Zero to Hero"?

First, range was pretty good, especially for indoors since 2E also eliminated that aspect of range where outdoors it was yards and indoors it was in feet. Range was always in yards in 2E. The specialist bonus was good to 30’, which was pretty good in dungeon settings. You also could stack...

D&D 5E (2024) Experienced DMs, how useful is the 2024 DMG to you?

I’ll be honest in saying that so far, I’m not really impressed with 2024, but I can’t imagine how any DMG could be worse than the 5E one. Honestly, I’ll probably pick it up first to see if it actually is useful beyond a magic item list.

AD&D 2E Did The Complete Fighter's Handbook kill "Zero to Hero"?

Thrown missile weapons technically were nerfed in errata by having the max damage bonus limited to the highest value of the damage die, so for darts +3/+2 S-M/L That said, 2E (and possibly 1E) allowed stacking THAC0 bonuses for both Strength and Dexterity for thrown weapons. So, technically a...

AD&D 2E Did The Complete Fighter's Handbook kill "Zero to Hero"?

There is a lot of junk in them, but there are also some real gems. Spells & Magic is by far the best of the three Players’ Option books. Combat & Tactics has more good than bad, fixing crossbows if nothing else, but also the weapon proficiency and unarmed combat systems are clean and concise...

When Do the 5E “Ride or Die” Folks Become Grogs Like The Rest of Us in “D&D Older Editions” And When Do We Get D&D 5E Flair for Posts?

Somewhat a fair point, however, while it seems significantly worse than say, 3E or especially 5E with the level based proficiency bonus, it’s not really truly equivalent because of the mechanics of the two systems. The AD&D system is a fixed target roll against the character’s ability score...
