    AD&D 2E Let's Read the AD&D 2nd Edition PHB+DMG!

I see you have an older version of the PHB which gave access to Divination to more than was supposed to be available. Although, I don’t think I’ve ever seen “any” in the race column before. It usually has Humans & Gnomes. This was corrected later, but honestly, Gnomish diviners didn’t seem...

In-Depth Review of the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide

The 1E guts are the same regardless of original or orange spine. Including the horrid Futura font. 2E re-release was a weird grab-bag. PHB & DMG were redone. MM, ToM, & BoA were original designs. Legends & Lore was just forgotten about. Granted, it was nearly useless to begin with. I liked...

In-Depth Review of the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide

Wow, I’m surprised to hear that actually. Even the copy used in the Core Rules CD-ROM was the 1995 version as it contained the errrata updates that were missing in the original printing, including removing stuff like gnomish diviners.

    AD&D 2E Let's Read the AD&D 2nd Edition PHB+DMG!

I’d be wary of using that as a reference. The dwarf-only sharpshooter kit shows up for any warrior as well. I’m sure there are others as there are lots of other weird things like half-elven multiclass bards as well, which wasn’t ever mentioned.

    AD&D 2E Let's Read the AD&D 2nd Edition PHB+DMG!

The beginning of 2E. It seems that many only have access to the 1995 reprinted version of the core books as this was what was released with Core Rules and is currently in pdf from DrivethruRPG. The original 1989 books were never digitized (to my knowledge) and have become harder to find. They...

    AD&D 2E Let's Read the AD&D 2nd Edition PHB+DMG!

It was simpler than the crit chart option, but the >5 AC required more fiddling and reduced crits by thieves and priests, where warriors had a big bump in crit rate. The PCs also took most of the hits, as they still have the most shots on goal. Another example of “nice on paper” similar to...

    AD&D 2E Let's Read the AD&D 2nd Edition PHB+DMG!

It’s been in there since the beginning, but similarly I’ve never seen it used. We always just did double damage dice plus modifiers as per the first option. We tried out the C&T system once and it was just brutal. PCs take way more shots than NPCs and you end up pretty mangled after a few...

In-Depth Review of the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide

First, there are two completely separate layouts. The 1989 release and 1995 release. Content is the same, however the layout and art was completely changed. The original design was never digitized, so unless you have a hard copy, it’s unlikely you ever see it. Second, I can’t stand to read any...

In-Depth Review of the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide

2E PHB & DMG layout is the best from a play perspective. The chapters matched up with each other. The DMG just takes the PHB chapter and expands it as needed from a DMs standpoint. A lot of the text is actually identical. It’s also the least thematic of all the other DMGs. It’s mostly mechanics.

    AD&D 2E Let's Read the AD&D 2nd Edition PHB+DMG!

This actually happened in the Player’s Option: Spells & Magic book. It was mostly just flavor, but there were some distinct level associated effects. When you compare the 2E specialists to the 1M-U & illusionist, there is already a lot more meat on those bones. It also actually simultaneously...

It was closer to the publication than its demise.

    AD&D 2E Let's Read the AD&D 2nd Edition PHB+DMG!

You have to remember the published settings used some options as core rules as well. They also outright broke or ignored some core stuff as well. Al-Qadim required all characters to use a kit for instance. Dark Sun had its 5d4 ability generation, everyone starts at 3rd level, and wild talents...

    AD&D 2E Let's Read the AD&D 2nd Edition PHB+DMG!

Magic-user and fighting-man had to be the clunkiest class descriptions ever.

    AD&D 2E Let's Read the AD&D 2nd Edition PHB+DMG!

The kits I’ve found best are for the settings in general. The ones in the complete series are often either useless or overpowered. I’ve heard more and more about this work by Zeb and it’s Taladas setting on Krynn in the past few weeks, having never heard about before October. Which is...

    AD&D 2E Let's Read the AD&D 2nd Edition PHB+DMG!

The kits themselves were explicitly for all warriors—that would have taken a significant rewrite to change. There is an entire section where kits are introduced which discusses how the kits are available for all warriors including how even paladins could be pirates in certain situations. In the...

    AD&D 2E Let's Read the AD&D 2nd Edition PHB+DMG!

I did go back and check. Apparently, the use of the term "warriors" in the sentence regarding weapon specialization was a typo. It was addressed in a Sage Advice column in 1991 (Dragon #173) and was corrected in the 11th printing of The Complete Fighter's Handbook.

    AD&D 2E Let's Read the AD&D 2nd Edition PHB+DMG!

It’s single class fighters not warriors. The BioWare games were using a different optional system from Player’s Option: Conbat & Tactica. Warriors gained access to taking a second slot and gaining expertise, except it didn’t differentiate between specialization and expertise. It also used the...

    AD&D 2E Let's Read the AD&D 2nd Edition PHB+DMG!

The ranger, RAW, is only reasonable if it were to used the rogue or priest XP table. It has no role at which it really excels.

    AD&D 2E Let's Read the AD&D 2nd Edition PHB+DMG!

I honestly think that’s how a cleric should be treated. I was doing this in 2E before it was introduced in 3E. I just kept an eye on the way the players run the cleric or priest. A lot of the RP stuff restricts them from being too aggressive. I mean, they are servants of the gods. They need...

    AD&D 2E Let's Read the AD&D 2nd Edition PHB+DMG!

I think you also leave out that the spheres were not only expanded, but sphere list changed for clerics and druids. As for weapons and armor, they are just as useful as warriors until 5th or so level as they have access to weapons that do basically the same damage. What makes a difference is...
