D&D General Eldritch Smite vs Paladin Smite (plus a house rule already)

It's hard to compare 2d6 damage per round plus blindness and difficult terrain with concentration to +4d8 damage on top of (2d6+4)x2 against one target.

D&D General Eldritch Smite vs Paladin Smite (plus a house rule already)

It's warlock 5 I think, so dips aren't the issue for warlock. 1 level of paladin already can get you Divine smite.

D&D General How early is too early for flight?

I ran a game from 3rd to 12th level and one of the characters had flight. Since most of the enemies were classed hobgoblins or dragons, the flight was never a problem.

D&D General How early is too early for flight?

I ran a game where the players were expressly asked to all be dwarves in a mercenary troup. Samsies can be fun.

D&D General How early is too early for flight?

Depends on the ancestry's theme. Birds and bats cannot hover without extra training (feat), as they're beeg. My bee-ple and fairies can, because their little. Birds have to circle

D&D General How early is too early for flight?

I've had flight as early as 1st level. But I make winged flight a little more complex. Minimum forward movement, turning angles, space requirements, and a defense penalty for having big honking wings unfurled. Flight is only a problem when the whole group can fly, which starts to be achievable...

D&D General It's Magic, You Know

My intent is to replace levels 1-5 spells with MP that recover on a short rest and then have full casters get additional long rest spell slots for their high level spells. Kinda like Warlock, but with the spell levels spread out like a half-caster (so level 5 would have up to 2nd level spells on...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Magic Items, Crafting, Etc

I was saying potato... If a wand is gonna be x price for a 1st level spell, then I'm only going to let that cast as 1st level. I'll charge more for a wand that can upcast. I remember the wand of magic missiles being the warlock's go to "this needs to die" tool. 6 charges every 2 or so days...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

If a typical fight all but required a short rest afterwards, that's good pacing for an rp focused game and would be a reasonable balance point.

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

That's how I ended up doing things in my last long 5E game. I planned for fights to be hard or deadly, with a short rest after 2 hard fights or 1 deadly fight, pushing for 3 deadly fights a day. I wanted to keep the fighter and warlock balanced against the cleric, because if things felt like 1...

D&D 5E (2024) How do we feel about 2024 Feats? (Origin vs Others)

I've been fiddling with if thr Baldur's Gate 3 version is balanced: it's basically advantage on weapon damage dice, it doesn't have the 1/round limit. But it's hard to say really, since the other Origin feats don't boost damage (unless you count shillelagh or true strike from the magic adept...

    D&D 5E (2024) Crazy armor idea

I love mucking about with the rules. At a glance, +1 AC is a 5% reduction in hits, so if you want it to be balanced against core then it needs to provide near 5% extra hp. Boiling things down to 2 variables is the best way to make things work easily. AC and HP is 2 variables. When you add in...

D&D 5E (2024) How do we feel about 2024 Feats? (Origin vs Others)

What's everybody's feeling on 2024 feats? Do they feel balanced against each other? Are Origin feats "worth as much as" later feats, meaning would you spend a level 4 or higher feat picking up another Origin feat? Similarly, do the fighting style feats feel like they're on the same level as...

D&D 5E (2024) Enhanced Critical Hits (Dynamic Critical Hits, WIP+)

There are certainly games where I'd want the potential lethality of fully exploding Critical Hits. Slow recovery (short rests are 8 hours, long rests are 2 days), horror rules, strict tracking of supplies... I want to do another horror game.

D&D General The Death of DIP feats...

I don't think those feats would be OP if added, even with a +1 ASI. Oh no, someone is gonna take eldritch adept to get eldritch mind when they could have just taken War Caster whatever will we do? Oh no, someone took eldritch adept to get armor of shadows when they could have taken Magic...

D&D 5E (2024) Enhanced Critical Hits (Dynamic Critical Hits, WIP+)

The issue is players will fight 400 or more mooks in their journey and way more attack rolls are made toward them than others. Thus, if there's a chance of an errant arrow one shotting a PC, it'll happen.

D&D 5E (2024) Enhanced Critical Hits (Dynamic Critical Hits, WIP+)

Having the Crits keep exploding is something that could be extra fun, but I left it out because I worry it would affect the PCs more. I could simply say mooks don't get critical hits, but I'm not sure I'd want that differentiation.

D&D 5E (2024) Enhanced Critical Hits (Dynamic Critical Hits, WIP+)

Max damage + the rolled damage increases the average damage more than I'd want, but just max damage feels boring. It was mostly a rule idea, just exploring slightly more complex options that could open up design space for more.
