D&D 5E (2014) Alchemist artificer house rule - impressions of balance

I wouldn't balk at some transformation magic being available as low as 1st level spells, so I don't think it would be a problem. 2nd level for winged flight then; fly at 3rd level still has advantages.

D&D 5E (2024) Dancing bards and true strike.

Giving gishes weapons as implements is one of my first house rules. They gave it to bladelocks iirc.

D&D General Greyhawk to Faerun and Beyond: A Multiversal D&D Lore Book Is Coming This Fall

I'd love a Setting Handbook, with overviews of 4 to 6 of the big campaign settings as half of the book and the other half as a setting design supplement to help groups make their own setting.

D&D 5E (2024) Enhanced Critical Hits (Dynamic Critical Hits, WIP+)

Hi everybody! Gearing up to start my first 5.5 game, and I'm gathering up my houserules (someone else us running a vanilla game, I'm the homebrewer in the group). I draw on a lot of prior editions and A5E in my games, and I started looking at Critical Hits. I've never liked 5E's "double the...

D&D 5E (2024) Do players really want balance?

Players want some measure of balance between players and between their choices. If X is better than Y in every way, then players of X feel let outshined by players of Y. Likewise, if Option X is better than Option Y in every way, that's not good for anyone. I've seen this happen a number of...

    D&D 5E (2024) Intersection of skill & tool proficiencies

Funny story, I was recently trying to get a straight answer on how far a badger could dig in X time. You think numbers like that would be easily searchable.

D&D General Why the Great Thief Debate Will Always Be With Us

When I was playing Mutants and Masterminds a lot, I noticed some patterns in the system. There were some generic functions that let you take a -5 penalty on a roll to get a benefit. I reverse engineered that and started letting people mimic feats and other abilities by taking a -5 penalty on the...

D&D 5E (2024) Poll) Will the DMG2024 have Infinite Quivers?

Once, but I can't remember if they ran out or if they were stolen from them.

D&D 5E (2024) Poll) Will the DMG2024 have Infinite Quivers?

One thing I liked about the infinity engine games were the weapon slots, the quiver slots, and the quick item slots. The notion that you can have X items at close reach that don't take extra time to get out during a fight is useful. But yeah, me keeping 4 stacks of 20 arrows on everyone was a...

I made a 5e campaign setting inspired by Ancient India!

I'll check this out. I really like the sound of it!

D&D 5E (2024) Poll) Will the DMG2024 have Infinite Quivers?

D&D style videogames have been doing that more lately. When I played pillars of eternity for the first time, I for reals spent 30 minutes in the starting area trying to find an NPC to buy arrows from before turning to the Internet and finding out ammunition was handwaved.

    D&D 5E (2024) Wizard subclasses are a missed opportunity.

I do actually like wizard and cleric subclasses being "generic". They're the base spellcasters and their core brings a lot of flavor already. "I study magic." "Oh, what kind of magic do you study?" "I spread the wisdom of my god." "Oh, what god do you worship?" I do find some of the fighter...

D&D 5E (2024) The New DM Tools In The New Dungeon Master's Guide

Except like the encounter building assumptions, magic item distribution assumptions... I for reals miss 3Es era of making tons of books for DMs and World Builders. It's honestly what really got me into D&D. The DMG gives understanding of the balance of the game in the system, and understanding...

D&D 5E (2024) The New DM Tools In The New Dungeon Master's Guide

I found the DMG 2014 a little hard to reference to find a particular rule, but I also found it's layout to be sensible when you're doing the thing you normally do with normal books: read them front to back. When I got mine day one way back 10 years ago, I read it front to back. I've done the...

D&D 5E (2024) Poll) Will the DMG2024 have Infinite Quivers?

It's not an endless quiver, you still have to fill it and count your nits.

D&D 5E (2024) Poll) Will the DMG2024 have Infinite Quivers?

The fact that I've had to houserules endless quivers as simple magic items in, I think, every edition I've ran is WILD to me. So, what do we think? Hank's Energy Bow is in, but is there a basic quiver of endless arrows? Also, what are your favorite magic items?

D&D General Why the Great Thief Debate Will Always Be With Us

I feel like the codified actions are gonna make play smoother for shy players who find it easier to say "Bob does X, y, and z", but I do worry that they may pull some people out of the game space. I already notice a difference with my two groups: one is real good about saying what they want to...
