D&D 5E (2024) Comeliness and Representation in Recent DnD Art

Technically, anyone drawn with sizable muscles is going to weigh more than the "recommended BMI", as will many who are taller or shorter than average. BMI is very ill conceived (you can see that the equation uses height squared, but mass is relative to height cubed, so numbers outside of a...

D&D 5E (2014) What fighting styles would you add?

That would be cool! Perhaps as simple as an attack bonus with simple weapons because you can use them very efficiently?

Planescape The Great Wheel, the World Axis, and the Abyss

Right. What I'm saying is if I use that, then there's no CE outer plane. So I'm trying to figure out a reconciliation; either there's a different CE outer plane separate from the abyss, or the abyss is an outer plane that plunges through reality and bores through the elemental chaos (meaning...

Planescape The Great Wheel, the World Axis, and the Abyss

Mostly it's replacing the Astral Plane with the Astral Sea (which also makes it easy to use Spell Jammer stuff too). Like 4E, Astral Sea is upper and Elemental Chaos is lower, with the world's of the material being in between. So the Astral Sea touches both the outer planes and the material...

Worlds of Design: The Problem with Magimarts

The way I reconcile magic stores in my games is this: Magic is a part of the world. Basic, inexpensive magic is common place. The "Magic Shoppe" is a place to buy spell and alchemical components. You can probably buy low level scrolls (common enough spells might be on hand, while spells less...

Planescape The Great Wheel, the World Axis, and the Abyss

Hi y'all. For ages, I've been running games in my own setting, but I've been drawn back to core D&D due to getting a hold of the 2E Planescape books. But, I really liked some of the 4E World Axis changes as well (like Angels serve all gods, not just good ones). But, I also love all the lore from...

D&D 5E (2014) What fighting styles would you add?

I agree, plus one more for polearms. I'd have Paladins and Rangers pick one and can change it on level up, while I'd let the fighter pick one per proficiency bonus. But I wish all of the fighting styles used Bonus actions, so they wouldn't be interchangeable.

    D&D General The Charisma Conundrum

I don't require players to tell me how they swing their sword, how they cast their spells, or how they pick a lock. I'm perfectly happy with someone saying "I want to intimidate the guard and get them to let us pass".

D&D General Changing your Rest paradigm is the single biggest, yet smallest, change you can make

I'm very excited to try out 8 hour short rests and haven requirements for longrests. I'm thinking about using Survival skill to make temporary havens, the DC depending on how rough the area is.

D&D General An Algorithm for DMs in Combat

Hi everyone. I've been wanting to make a loose algorithm for DMs to reference in combat for guiding actions of monsters and NPCs. I've been running games for 22 years now, but even I could use some guidance and a tool to offload mental energy onto. I've played a few D&D style boardgames that...

D&D General Accidental Advantage Math from a Math YouTuber

The unexpected logic behind rolling multiple dice and picking the highest Hey everyone, haven't been around much. Saw this video today and thought people would appreciate it. Seeing it layed out this way will certainly help with some of my testing math. This is a video from a British maths...

    D&D 5E (2014) Max HP?

Have you boosted the player's hp? Or just given the monsters a little padding?

    D&D 5E (2014) Max HP?

Once more, this was a mythic, so two fights, with a very dynamic lair that denied a few turns around the way. It being about 3 rounds for each phase didn't feel "epic". The challenge was tuned right, the players were biting their nails and almost went down a couple of times (there was one real...

    D&D 5E (2014) Max HP?

Last longer so that more cool things can happen. I've been building my own monsters a lot, stealing 4E ideas in a lot of places, but only mythic monsters get to stay around long enough to do anything.

    D&D 5E (2014) Max HP?

To be clear, this is 7 rounds of a mythic, so 2 regular fights. This was basically 3ish rounds for each phase, with wasted turns because of positioning due to the setpiece.

    D&D 5E (2014) Max HP?

There were a quite a few boss fights where they took out the enemy much faster than expected, like in 1 to 1.5 rounds. They definitely changed the mood of what I was going for. Sometimes we focus 100% on player engagement, but we should remember that the DM is a player too and the DM needs to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Max HP?

It was the final fight of a 3 year campaign, against an aspect of a goddess, and it lasted 42 seconds game time. I had to build her an an over leveled mythic purposefully leaned on the defensive side so that she could survive long enough to feel threatening without being able to liquify everyone...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dnd 5e, but everything is a “spell”

Yes! Yes you could. The spell point system in the DMG, when divided by 3 for short rests per long rest, is kinda close to 2/level if you squint. Half casters can then be 1/level. Oh look, the monk is already 1/level. Adapting them to a power system was a project of mine before Level Up was...
