    D&D 5E (2014) Longswords

That's pretty much what we do. For a more D&Dish name for the arming sword we use the names broadsword, sabre, elven thinblade, and falchion to represent the same thing in (ie 1d8 slashing finesse) I'm surprised that when they didn't convert the longsword to its historical version, that they...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Misrepresentation of Charisma

The 5e DMG does suggest that you reward for non combat as well as combat options but has no real framework for how much to award

Well Con certainly doesn't hold true in the other pillars, except for the odd undetected trap or certain types of endurance. Whereas combat is typically the only way you die I wouldn't say its the only way of measuring success or failure. Anyway, that's all group related and you are trying to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Ability Scores

Ok I assume you are referring to combat only then. There are some cases where you could want both Dex and Str e.g barbarians, but yes then Con is probably top of the list. You could work out a framework for monster knowledge checks which would emphasis Int in combat a little more. However for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Longswords

Ah those ridiculous 3e bucklers. I didn't mean those made up things but more of a real world buckler which in 3e terms is a light shield. Non of that silly strap on arm stuff that allows the benefit of both. So a shield, that is held in the hand but easy to equip (an interaction). You couldn't...

    D&D 5E (2014) Ability Scores

I agree, however we are often trying to manipulate someone when its important. We often use cha checks to gather information, we often capture enemies not kill them, we sometimes lie to enemies. We also tend to roleplay the mental stats. I don't always want to play an unsociable character. If...

    D&D 5E (2014) Ability Scores

I agree that not all characters need to do everything. That's kind of my point. Once you have decided on your high stat you can mostly put the other stats wherever you want based on what skill usage you fancy or simply to round out the character. The OP is suggesting a house rule to benefit...

    D&D 5E (2014) Ability Scores

The problem you are describing focuses mainly on combat. What about skill use? If a high Dex character dumps strength then they have to accept that they can't climb, swim, break down doors or carry much equipment if you use the encumbrance variant. A high Str, low Dex character tends to alert...

The additional of a buckler (+1 AC) which only takes an interaction to equip might go some way to encourage the use of versatile. That and your heavy weapon idea

Unearthed Arcana New Barbarian Primal Paths in November 7th Unearthed Arcana

Assuming of course that a raging barbarian would care. Then again, I get berserkers to make perception checks to perceive friend from foe. What's a little blue on blue between party members eh?

    D&D 5E (2014) Totally underwhelmed by 5e bladesinger, am I missing something?

Nobody is saying that (I don't think). They need to make a stealth check, probably as a move action as they slip away. They still need to roll high (if one opponent spots them they can tell the others). Look at page 194 under unseen attackers and targets. 'Combatants often try to escape their...

    D&D 5E (2014) Totally underwhelmed by 5e bladesinger, am I missing something?

The Hide action is A way of using stealth in combat. Its not the only way. You can use stealth in combat without hiding if the situation calls for it. There are several other examples of DEX checks (stealth) given that heavily relate to moving silently Equally hiding (using the hide action) is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Totally underwhelmed by 5e bladesinger, am I missing something?

I don't need to give cunning action to all creatures that need to be stealthy when I can just let anything move silently when already invisible or fully concealed. Stealth rules in combat are not remotely codified to the degree you are suggesting and fully support both of our interpretations...

    D&D 5E (2014) Totally underwhelmed by 5e bladesinger, am I missing something?

Where does it say moving silently requires the hide action first? Skill use in general does not require a specific action - it leaves it in the hands of the DM to decide on. So you could play it like you say and require a hide action (and movement else there is no point) to hide your location in...

    D&D 5E (2014) Totally underwhelmed by 5e bladesinger, am I missing something?

Well you can't follow the sound of its buzzing wings if you can't hear them. Moving silently using a stealth check is a valid use of a dex (stealth) check. What if there were several pixies all at range, invisible and moving quietly? Can a character track them all even if they don't use the hide...

D&D 5E (2014) Characters are not their statistics and abilities

I play with my mates of over 30 years. Sometimes we play pretty ineffective characters (stat/feature wise) that don't pull their full weight certainly in combat. Sometimes that is bad stat rolling, sometimes by picking feats and spells that look cool or help with a theme, but actually aren't...

    D&D 5E (2014) Totally underwhelmed by 5e bladesinger, am I missing something?

I agree. If you always force the requirement of a hide action it creates some pretty odd situations. For example Pixie goes invisible and then sneaks away with its awesome stealth (move action). I would definitely require a perception check to know where it was even though it technically didn't...

D&D 5E (2014) What official material is considered problematic to the point where it is not balanced and presents a problem?

Fair enough. In all the games I have played so far the earliest I have seen full plate is level 6 when we took it off an opponent, but my character didn't get it. The earliest one of my characters has been able get some is level 7. Looking at the DMG treasure tables and the official modules I...

D&D 5E (2014) Dropping your sword during the enemy's turn?

If that's the case there is no problem then. I have seen several characters who typically had both hands full when wanting to cast a spell - a cleric, a rogue arcane trickster, a bard, a paladin. There is no issue really though. They just put a weapon away to cast a spell and then use a...

D&D 5E (2014) Dropping your sword during the enemy's turn?

I was replying to a different point about whether you can make somatic gestures as a cleric or paladin by using their shield. As to the original question, I am perfectly happy for someone to drop a weapon either on or off their turn to cast a spell.
