    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

Fixed. Something went wrong with using the Amp version, so I bypassed Amp.

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

All attacks do added ability modifier damage on a hit (with the exception of attacks that don't deal damage). Crawford has even clarified that alchemical items like alchemist's fire add ability modifier fire damage (which ends up being delayed until future rounds due to the special rule for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

I think we're talking about different things. You seem to be taking about a perception of lackluster caster contribution to combat. I'm asking whether anyone sees players grumble (because they don't want to be outclassed in utility) when another player brings a utility-focused (i.e...

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

I'm confused. My question was whether people see players complain when another player brings a utility-focused caster to the table. What does the availability of AL magic items have to do with whether or not players complain about utility-focused casters? The only items on that list with active...

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

Out of curiousity, how often do people actually see grumbling from the other players when someone brings a utility-focused caster to the table? In my experience, the other players are usually thrilled, because the utility caster's spells give the entire party many more strategic and tactial options.

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

I agree that spells will be more impactful. Just pointing out that it's possible to make a martial with a round-by-round decision tree of similar complexity to that of a wizard.

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

5e doesn't make it easy, but with multiclassing, feats, and careful subclass choice one can make a martial with a complex decision tree, rivalling that of a full caster. In particular, any martial with 3+ levels of Thief and a large supply of consumables (oil, alchemist's fire, caltrops, acid...

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

If your casters aren't casting out-of-combat utility spells at your table, then why do the players of martial classes feel left behind in utility?

D&D General That Which Cannot Be Fought

Yes, my homebrew world is full of "bigger fish" NPCs and some of them are so "big" as to be practically unbeatable in combat. That doesn't mean the PCs can't choose to oppose such creatures, but victory (if any) isn't going to be through traditional combat. (I imagine the strategies with the...

D&D General Do you care about lore?

I don't care about the lore of published settings precisely because of the lack of continuity between editions. If I could count on there being continuity, I might have considered using a published setting for my campaigns. But I don't see any advantage to running games in a persistent setting...

D&D General Do players even like the risk of death?

An unlosable battle can still be very exciting if it's possible to fail at one's goals despite winning the fight. An unlosable battle can also be exciting when it's unknown whether the cost of victory will be affordable.

D&D General Discuss: Combat as War in D&D

It doesn't have to be "purely gamist reasons". Sure, the DM isn't going to have that level of detail and will need to make something up, but that doesn't mean the DM can't try to make a reasonable extrapolation from established facts in the game world. Sure, there will be inevitably be some...

D&D General Discuss: Combat as War in D&D

You appear to be approaching your examples as a DM choosing which mechanical representation of an Ogre will be the most fun for a party of a particular level. That works great in a CaS playstyle, where the DM is planning the encounters with an eye towards fun and balance. But in a CaW...

D&D 5E (2014) Long Rests vs Short Rests

An AL DM is allowed to introduce new encounters if (and only if) they "maintain the spirit of the adventure". If, after reading the published adventure being run, the DM can honestly say that they think it's within the spirit of the published adventure to add a random encounter every 59 minutes...

D&D 5E (2014) Long Rests vs Short Rests

Adventurer's League Dungeon Master's Guide v9.1, page 2. The DM can change the content of the adventure, but the DM can't implement new rules.

D&D 5E (2014) Long Rests vs Short Rests

Quick note: under AL rules the DM can't change the resting mechanics.

D&D 5E (2014) Long Rests vs Short Rests

Interesting approach! I've considered going with 5 minute short rests and 8 hour long rests, but the Warlock class always gives me pause. Do you make additional changes to the Warlock class to account for 5 minute short rests? For clarity, the problem I see with 5 minute short rests is that a...

D&D General Discuss: Combat as War in D&D

Two responses: First, I interpreted @AbdulAlhazred's post as expanding the scope of the conversation beyond 4e, and into a broader discussion of the role of the game world. So my response, although borrowing a term (minion) from 4e, was not intended to be 4e-specific, but instead apply to any...

D&D General Discuss: Combat as War in D&D

For me, world-building is one the biggest draws of TTRPGs. As a DM, developing an evocative, self-consistent world is what makes the prep time fun. And that time investment pays off again with additional fun at the table when I see the players engrossing themselves in my world to the point that...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you feel about games without Feats and Multiclassing?

I'll play either way if I like the DM and it sounds like a fun campaign. There are, however, several classes/subclasses I would avoid in a game with no feats or multiclassing just because I don't personally find them sufficiently appealing (thematically and/or mechanically) to want to be stuck...
