Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

I think that's the crux of it. One of the reasons I'm on the lookout for a game that actually explains how to implement narrative structure in a game is that while a lot of players might want a story, even after a lifetime of consuming stories, there's no guarantee they will actually know how...

I am surprised I am still excited for Daggerheart

Gotcha. The GM Principles, GM Best Practices, Pitfalls to Avoid, hard and soft moves, GM Moves, Countdowns, and Thinking in Beats are all fairly standard in PbtA games...though some have different names in those systems. Sorry. I didn't mean to put you on the spot. Finding a game that actually...

Goodman Games Revives Relationship With Anti-Semitic Publisher For New City State Kickstarter [UPDATED]

I think he already has. But yeah, that would finish off what's left of his reputation.

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

I think the first thing I'm doing is making a Dragonbane-like duck ancestry.

How Long Do You Wait Before You Houserule a New TTRPG?

Chesterton’s Fence. I want to get a good handle on the system as it’s meant to be played before changing things. A few sessioms or adventures at least.

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

Again, this is specifically called out in Shadowrun Anarchy as not acceptable. It is similarly called out in Daggerheart. A given group not being able to handle more narrative control does not mean narrative control is bad. Not every game is for every group. That’s to be expected.

Goodman Games Revives Relationship With Anti-Semitic Publisher For New City State Kickstarter [UPDATED]

If even half of that’s true whatever reputation Goodman had left was just torpedoed to hell.

Goodman Games Revives Relationship With Anti-Semitic Publisher For New City State Kickstarter [UPDATED]

You enter into contracts willingly and with something like this there’s almost always an out. A time limit or a kill fee, etc. Goodman is doing this because he wants to and thinks its important. That he thinks it’s more important than not giving money to Nazis is why I’ll never buy or use...

    Dragonbane Announces Two New Books

It’s dead simple to flip it to a roll-high system and ducks are awesome.

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

Daggerheart is not designed for gamers out to win or optimize the fun out of the game. It’s designed for roleplayers looking to maximize the drama. Playing in good faith is required for some of these systems to work. ETA: This exact thing is called out in Shadowrun Anarchy as abusing the system...

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

I’ve loved bullywugs since my first AD&D game in 1984.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Fans of a system will say literally anything to justify liking that system. Haters of a system will say literally anything to justify hating that system. It's effectively impossible to tell the difference between honest criticism and someone "being a hater" when you love something. Humans...

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

It's really, really not though. It's a wargame at its core and has been since the beginning. What little "collaborative storytelling" elements 5E has are bolted on and vestigial at best. It's also telling that those same elements were removed in the 2024 version of 5E while the wargame elements...

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

That's my concern as well. As mentioned at the tail end of Christian's Daggerheart review he mentions the split between the crunchy combat and almost freeform narrative elements. To get the most out of a game like this you need to find players who like both. That's going to be a huge ask. In my...

I am surprised I am still excited for Daggerheart

Maybe I'm weird but that's where I spend most of my time. I start with the referee section and read it multiple times as I slowly work my way through the other chapters. I normally save the player-facing stuff for last as I'm far more interested in running games than playing them. Especially new...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

That requires gatekeeping. Or training up the fans we already have. If the internet has taught me anything it’s that the vast majority of people don’t want to learn anything, they just want what they already know or think reaffirmed by others. Yep.

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

Entirely depends on the neurodivergent person. We had a few in our group, me included. Wide range of ages. Some loved it some hated it. Some wanted more crunch. Some wanted less crunch. Neurodivergent people are not a monolith. Nothing is one-size-fits-all for any group, but especially for...

I am surprised I am still excited for Daggerheart

Yep. And there's a section in the book on flavoring your abilities, so simply describing your wizard's magic abilities as mechanical gadgets could be sufficient to make an artificer for a lot of players.
